My daughter (15 months) has had diarrhoea/ loose bowels for about 2 weeks now, going several times a day and always runny and smelly. Was just putting it down to teething and the fact she eats like a horse at first but starting to get a bit concerned. Spoke to my Dr who said to put her on a bland diet for a few days and see if that helps. But last night she did this poo, someone told me black tarry poo can indicate bleeding so I went down to the Drs and asked if I could have a sample pot for it but they can't send it off until Monday and I can't stop stressing about it. There's obviously lots of mucus too. Should I be worried? What could be causing bleeding if there is any?

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Hi OP, could she have a milk intolerance? Someone on here posted a pic a while ago that was similar and it turns out it was due to a dairy allergy. Did your DD have a bug prior to the bad tummy - my DD always had mucus in her poos until we realised she was coeliac - up until then, she was diagnosed with toddler's diarrhoea.

@Blossomandblooms Hi thanks for your reply, she actually already has lacto free milk because I was worried about that before. She has eczema and a peanut allergy so probably wouldn't be a stretch to say she could be intolerant to something else like gluten. How do they test for celiac disease?

Coeliac disease is diagnosed via a blood test; my DD had an awful tummy when she was little but it was always diagnosed as something else (such as the toddler's diarrhoea). It was a relief to have her diagnosed actually, as she was so poorly with it. You don't have to have a family history of it either to actually suffer with it. I would ask them to check but it sounds like her tummy has taken a hit from a bug and it can take a while to recover. I remember when DD was at nursery and she had a bug and her poops were like slop / pate for well over 2 months. We had a couple of stools sent away and tested but it never showed anything.

@Blossomandblooms Thank you, if her sample comes back fine I will push for a blood test. She goes to a childminder and gets coughs and colds constantly but I don't remember her having a bug before the diarrhoea started, but I could be wrong. How is your daughter now?

She is much better now thanks - coeliac disease is an autoimmune disease where the body attacks itself if gluten is ingested, so since we went gluten-free, we rarely have issues (only if she has gluten is there a problem). It's always worth checking, as children's tummies can be out of sorts for all sorts of reasons x

@Blossomandblooms I can imagine it must be hard trying to avoid gluten, glad to hear she's better now tho. Thank you x
