Threadworm help!!

frenchiemummy92 · 13/07/2023 23:39

DD2 has had threadworms three times in 4 months. Last being end off May. Tonight complaining of itching and again threadworms!

Towels are all washed on 90 and only used once, everything is washed after one wear. Beds are washed weekly. I don't understand where she's picking them up unless its from school. I'm encouraging hand washing and treated her again but how can we stop this?!

Do you do the follow up dose 2 weeks after the first one?

pinkmummy1 · 14/07/2023 07:41

It will be school my dd has had them 4 times in year one. Luckily noone else in the house has had them yet but I treat everyone the same with the tablets and then a second dose 2 weeks later. Children are lovable disgusting creatures 🤣

porridgecake · 14/07/2023 07:46

It will be school. There will be some poor child that isn't being treated.

frenchiemummy92 · 14/07/2023 11:43

Yes follow up dose given.

DD1 has had them twice in that time as well but seems to be DD2 that's catching more often!

I'm currently boil washing everything again and bleaching everywhere. Me and DP never catch them. Both been showered this morning as soon as they woke up and will again before bed along with numerous pant changes through out the day.

She was very upset last night with itchiness so if she is catching them from school you'd expect that child to be the same so I'd hope the parents do know.

I feel your pain. My DD seems to get them regularly and I can’t understand how to get rid for good. I do everything we’re supposed to.
Are you all dosed with the meds at the same time? Me and DH take the meds too.

toomanyleggings · 14/07/2023 13:04

I posted about this the other day. I think you can give more than one dose and it still be safe. I’d have a chat with your Gp and see if they can give something other than ovex or up the dosage. I think girls suffer more than boys because they get into the vagina. There’s a podcast about it here https://www.fxmedicine.com.au/podcast/chronic-threadworm-infections-rachel-arthur

Chronic Threadworm Infections with Rachel Arthur | FX Medicine

Worms never conjure up a pleasant picture in our minds and threadworm might be more sinister than we've been led to believe.

Sometimes I feel like kids are like dogs and should be wormed monthlyConfused but presumably the meds are too strong for that.

Are they nail biters? I was, and I was very prone to worms. Grim.

frenchiemummy92 · 15/07/2023 07:25

@Wormworrier yeah we all take the medicine first dose then repeat. I now just have it in the house incase luckily.

Last night was rough. She spent a lot of the night crying and complaining of been uncomfortable/itchy. Finally got her to sleep about 12:30am.

NHS website says they can go in to school with them but I'm wondering if I inform the school how many times they've actually had them. Maybe they'd send a notification out like they do with nits

@toomanyleggings I'm going to speak to the pharmacist today after work. See what they suggest. If not I'll definitely ring my GP. Yes I thought it's probably worse for girls.

@EggbertHeartsTina no neither bite their nails but admittedly not brilliant hand washers and often have to be reminded to go back and wash their hands

Might seem like a silly question but when she is complaining of itchiness do you remove the offending worm?! My daughter is prone to worms occasionally and so we also always have the medication in the house but first thing I do is remove it with a tissue! Means she has never been kept up at night with it at least ..

toomanyleggings · 15/07/2023 07:49

@Anotherdayanothermoodswing this is true. I removed two from my daughter and she was a bit calmer. My gp also prescribed some phenergan to calm
her down at night. @frenchiemummy92 you can ask the pharmacist for that as well. It can be so distressing for them

Mumsanetta · 15/07/2023 07:52

They are horrible things! When my DD was screaming in the night with them i found an old thread on here that suggested wiping her bum with wet cotton wool to get rid of the worm secretions and then putting Vaseline on her bum as that stops them moving around. It really helped.

porridgecake · 15/07/2023 12:22

I used to wash with warm water then apply a liberal amount of sudocrem.

frenchiemummy92 · 16/07/2023 10:18

Yes I have been removing them. We got some sleep last night luckily. Wondering if I can give the follow up dose a bit earlier? Didn't have chance to speak to a pharmacist as ended up working over time

How is it going ? Did you manage to get rid of them?

Ethny · 06/03/2025 17:32

@frenchiemummy92 @Wormworrier How are you doing? Are you finally threadworm free?
