Experiences of thread worms? Worried

DD9 had noticeable threadworms in her poo and her bottom on Friday. I’ve dosed everyone with ovex and been bleaching, boilwashing and hoovering since then. I know to give a second dose in two weeks and nails short etc. She’s very distressed, itchy and sore in her vagina and her bottom still today. Should this be subsiding now? I’m also concerned about how long she’s had them. She’s complained about a sore vagina and bum on and off for two years but I’ve never seen any threadworms before. I did have her examined when she’d been up all night crying with pain in her bum and nothing was found. They just gave her canestan. She’s also got a lot of stomach issues, including abdominal pain, vomiting and diarrhoea that she’s had numerous tests and ultrasound under the hospital who seem to think it’s stomach migraines and IBS. Nobody ever mentioned threadworms. I’m concerned about how long she’s had threadworms untreated and if it could be causing any of her symptoms. I feel awful at the moment. Any experiences?

My daughter has just got rid of a horrific threadworm infestation. Three days of tablets prescribed by the GP and she's right as rain despite having a horrendous couple of months with it. You can buy the tablets from the pharmacy but the ones from the pharmacy is just one or two doses, my daughter was prescribed twice daily for three days.

She was very, very unwell (2 A&E visits, OOH the lot) but is fully recovered now.

@crankyhousewife I’m sorry to hear that. What we’re her symptoms? I rang the gp to see if I could give her more doses but was told no. Just the one 100mg tablet. Was it the ovex stuff you had? How old is your dd if you don’t mind me asking?

DD had horrific threadworms six months ago. It took four days from taking the tablet for them to go. She was in so much pain with it - I had no idea they could get so bad. Finally - mercifully- the tablets kicked in

It’s a bloody nightmare isn’t it? I was physically plucking worms out of my dd’s bottom the other night. Poor thing was so upset. I haven’t seen any tonight but she’s still itching and sore

I gave my daughter oat baths to soothe the irritation / soreness and covered her in sudocrem at night.
Important to wash first thing in the morning also.

Both of my daughter's (but not my son's) have suffered horrifically with threadworms in childhood, one seemed to outgrow it at secondary age. They didn't tend to be very itchy but in extreme pain in their vahina, screaming all night long, many awful nights. I only figured out what it was from a Mumsnet post 13 years ago, and since then I've seen many people post of their girls screaming with mystery pain in their vahina through the night that goes in the day, and comes back again at night. GP's just seem clueless and it isn't common knowledge. The ones who get like this tend to have fairly regular episodes, I am wondering now if my daughter's have had severe cases and the Ovex we use just keeps the numbers down for a few months. I'd be interested to hear what the prescribed medication was that a PP mentioned.

Advice I've picked up over the years from other posts is to try vaseline or Coconut oil, or any other lubricant to stop the worms from burrowing. Any oil would work for one dd, but only Coconut oil helps the other, and not always. I also read a theory that some people are allergic to them and that is why they suffer, so washing before applying the oil works best, I often put mine in a shallow bath in the middle of the night during an episode, more for distraction from the screaming than because it really helped. I have found that Piriton does tend to help too. Usually for us the Ovex works by the second night. I hope they go soon, it's horrible ible for them but also awful for the adult to be up not sleeping but not being able to help too.

Definitely paste the sudocrem on thick then they can't wriggle about.

@User68253 I came across this podcast that seems to suggest girls might be worse affected bevayse of them going into the vagina. https://www.fxmedicine.com.au/podcast/chronic-threadworm-infections-rachel-arthur

Chronic Threadworm Infections with Rachel Arthur | FX Medicine

Worms never conjure up a pleasant picture in our minds and threadworm might be more sinister than we've been led to believe.

I’ve been using coconut oil on her as well as I read about that. She seems a bit better today/ last night.
