Reflux in baby suddenly

Hello everyone,

I am wondering if you can help.

I have a five month old who suffered bad reflux in the really early days, he has been great ever since but suddenly the past week he has started reflux again on every feed and a considerable amount.

We havent changed anything about the way we do things or feed him, naturally google is just telling me its reflux, what I already know. What I ideally need to know is whether this sudden influx of reflux is something to be concerned about and if theres anything I can do to help him.

It is worth noting that he is still happy in himself smiling and laughing away so doesn't seem to be affecting him overly much.

Any help or advice from previous experiences is greatly appreciated.

Was he on any medication for the reflux?

ACSKJR · 11/07/2023 10:22

Nope none, was advised it was normal and will grow out of it, its our first so we were getting used to everything. He had a tongue tie up until two weeks which was the highest rating which was a big contributor.

Changed the angle we feed him and the amount we burp and that seemed to do the trick, up until recently that is :)

Hmm. Not sure then... I know we had to change medication amounts as he got bigger so thought it might be that.

Has he had a cold? Mine always had worse reflux when his nose was blocked, it was reasonably well controlled with infant Gaviscon but went back to Exorcist style vomits when he was snotty.

He doesn't seem to have had a cold, we had a look at infant gaviscon, problem is we already give him Infocol on all feeds because he suffers with wind, so I was hoping to avoid medicinal remedies if you know what I mean.

Does he still need Infacol at five months? I thought that was only really for younger colicy babies (though we didn't use it so actually have no idea, other than seeing friends use it early on).

If he needs medicating he needs medicating, using one thing doesn't prevent you using something else if he needs it.

I would probably go to the GP for peace of mind, but no idea what could be causing it.

It could be that he doesn't need the Infacol anymore. My DS had Infacol and Gaviscon when he was younger but we found the Infacol just made the reflux worse, it brought his wind up but all his feed with it! If he's getting his wind up okay on his own the Infacol could be too much.

ACSKJR · 11/07/2023 12:18

Thanks for this, we have decided to wean off the Infacol, we think it may be that his digestive system is maturing and doesnt need it so we completely agree with you, when did yours come off infacol if you dont mind me asking?

@ACSKJR I think he was about 3/4 months, to be honest he wasn't on it for long because we noticed quite quickly it wasn't agreeing with him.
