Teething at age 6?

My son has just turned 6 and for the past few nights has been unable to sleep saying his cheek and ear hurt. Today I realised it might actually be his gum. I booked a dentist appointment for tomorrow, but will have to pay as the dentist I have been going to for 15 years suddenly doesn't take NHS patients any more. I just googled and apparently it's common for back molars to come through at the age of 6. Maybe that explains it. I don't really want to go and spend £50 tomorrow just to be told a new tooth is coming through! Has anyone's similarly aged child had similar pain around the same age?

My eldest is 9 but earlier this year we had the same thing, he had some tooth ache that he had been complaining about so we booked him in at the dentist (he was due anyway) and she confirmed it was just his molars coming though. Also have a teething 6 month old so didn’t think I’d be dealing with two lots of teething 😂 anyway they came through not long after and all fine now. Can you see anything when you look in his mouth?

Yes 6 year molars are definitely a thing

Yes, adult molars start to come in at the back at this age. It usually happens around the same time as teeth start to fall out.

Thanks all. He's lost 8 front teeth now and has 2 big adult teeth at the front and 4 on the bottom. I'll give it a few days while I try and find an NHS dentist!!

My daughter is 6 and kept asking about her wisdom teeth. I said your far to young for them and had a look and got a fright when i seen her back teeth coming in lucky enough i had dentist next day so took a pic to show and yes was her adult teeth not her wisdom 😀 they did say if it is causing pain can give paracetomal and ibprofen.

My six year old has all her back molars through or partially through. See if your son can point out where it hurts because that’s the most likely cause.

Yep! My DD (aged 7) has a sore gum and I was worried that she had a cyst or something but now her back molar is just erupting!
