Advice needed on foot injury (photo included)

I took DS (3) to a splash park earlier. He was having a great time but then suddenly started crying and was really upset. We didn't see anything happen, but when we got home I realised he wouldn't bear weight on one foot.

Then noticed a a red circle on one of his toes - I think the skin has come off? I can only think he put his toe over one of the jets to stop the water and this happened but not 100% sure.

He's been pretty upset all night, won't straighten his leg and keeps waking up crying.

Do you think it's just sore, or needs further investigation?

Ooh that does look painful. Has the skin come off that whole circle ? It looks almost as though it has gone across something sharp and taken a layer of skin off.

Daisythecat15 · 21/06/2023 22:40

Oh bless him, that looks sore. From the photo it just looks like a blister/raw skin. But I'm not surprised he doesn't want to walk on it. Unless you think his toe is injured in any other way, I'd probably put some antiseptic on it and a plaster and see how he goes?

BCCGoAway · 21/06/2023 22:40

I’d take him to a minor injuries unit tomorrow as he needs a dressing on that and something to prevent infection.

Otherwise known as a plaster, that his Mum can put on.

It doesn’t need minor injuries, put a dressing on it at home, keep an eye on it, give calpol for pain relief.

If it’s a chemical burn, which is a possibility given how it looks and where he was, a regular plaster would not be suitable.

fairlygoodmother · 21/06/2023 22:44

If he also can’t straighten his leg it sounds like a bone or muscle injury in addition to the blister/burn on his foot. Can he tell you where it hurts?

If you think it’s just the toe I’d try a pharmacist, if it might be something else as well probably minor injuries or paeds A&E if you have one locally.

I looks like he stood on something very hot, like a metal coin or something circular (those round floor studs in tarmac/drives) in the hot sun. With such delicate skin, it can burn easily and just peel right off! (Only guessing, but I saw this abroad when a toddler stepped onto a metal gutter grate and burnt their soles. Much worse than this though!)

I'd dress it, keep an eye out for pain and infection.

blahblahblah1654 · 21/06/2023 22:49

Ouch looks like a nasty cut. Maybe some calpol for pain relief. Leave uncovered at home but a plaster on if you're going out. Gp or pharmacist if it doesn't heal. I wouldn't wait around day in a&e or minor injuries for it.

Yes! It's a blister. Conmpede are good.

BCCGoAway · 21/06/2023 22:51

I realise it’s a post code lottery, but minor injuries units around here are usually lot faster than A&E or even some GPs. This is exactly the kind of thing they exist to help with and when it’s a child, they would rather see them than not.

Worriedmum40284 · 21/06/2023 22:57

Thanks for your advice everyone. Yes it looks like the skin has come off of that whole circle and even the bit outside it looks a slightly different colour. I did wonder if he's somehow burnt it on something, there are metal plates around the jets I think so maybe it was that?

We've put a plaster on it (which he hated but we thought it needed to be covered). I popped a sock over the foot to try and distract him from said plaster. He hates anyone touching his feet on a good day!

We've given him some calpol now so hopefully he settles a little more.

I think (hope) the weight bearing and not straightening his leg is due to him being so conscious of his toe.

Will leave him to hopefully sleep now and see how he is in the morning, we've got a minor injuries fairly closeby so will try that or a pharmacy if any concerns.

I think ours is reasonably ok. Would you wait until the morning now he is asleep?

Sorry was asleep. I’d take him today. Those jets are pretty strong and if it was that, it may have also fractured his big toe as well as taken off the skin.

Sorry for delay in updating - DS's toe looked more raw this morning and we thought it may have been a bit weepy so managed to get an early doctor's appt. The doctor thinks it's either a friction burn or burst blister.

She was happy it looked clean and wasn't concerned at all. We managed to get a dressing back on and covered with a sock. That seemed to take his mind off it and he's now mostly walking ok on it.

He only seems to get upset when he notices it so it's OK once it's covered up! Thanks for all your advice and reassurance last night, it really helped Smile
