Can the heat cause a nighttime cough?!

DD is 4, has seasonal asthma which has only ever affected her in the winter, when she can get seriously awful coughs, she has 8 puffs of brown inhaler a day then, rest of the year, such as now, she has 4 puffs a day.

She doesn't cough during the day but the last 2 weeks she's coughed every night in her sleep. Sometimes once, sometimes a few times. I've bought new anti allergy pillows for her, her room is well ventilated, she has a fan on at night. Room hoovered regularly. I do give her one dose of Piriton in the day as her eyes were watering a wee bit now & again, so I thought maybe hayfever, but this could be me getting it wrong.

Obviously the weather has been hot. We live on a farm so no nearby pollution. Just seems really odd to only cough at night, just wondered if anyone else had any experience of anything similar?

It certainly sounds as though the pollen has affected her. Has she got a blue inhaler? She probably needs one, or to use it regularly at the moment.

Sounds like hay fever to me.

If her nose is a bit blocked, she'll be breathing more through her mouth, which could make her throat dry and bring on the cough. It's probably nothing to worry about.

@Squiblet no her nose isn't blocked that's why I'm unsure exactly what is causing the occasional coughs. I would have thought if it is hayfever, me only giving her one dose of Piriton a day would only give her relief for the life of the dose which is 4-6 hours. She's still having her inhaler. Seems odd!

If it is hayfever then having a fan on is the absolute worst thing you can do for her as it will literally be blowing pollen and dust and all that junk around the room all night long. Especially if it’s a farm! All that grass pollen and mown hay floating about in the night air…you know the first round of hay is being harvested now.

Hayfever isn’t always sinus…it can be asthma, eyes, mouth/throat.

The pollen and fans bad idea. Pollen rises during the day and drops at night. It's bothering me more this year. Cold spring so the pollen is more intense.

You don't keep chickens do you?

My kids are both on piriton for coughs.. Youngest in particular - fought for months because of her age before a Dr finally agreed to give piriton a go (my side of the family all have hay fever and asthma so I had a good guess it would help) but she takes it morning and night.

8 puffs of the brown inhaler is a lot though.. Our prescription is 2 blue 1 brown twice daily and doubled during winter when worse with up to 10 puffs of blue when struggling. But with the brown being steroid they don't want her taking too much of it

I have hayfever and asthma. When I am lying down at night the mucous caused by the hay fever trickles down my wind pipe and causes me to cough.

EmmiJay · 20/06/2023 23:03

Both DD and I have this exact cough. I put it down to hayfever, too. This is our second week of it, and it's finally calming down. When she starts coughing at night, I let her sip some water, and that seems to help. During the day, we keep liquids up, and it subdues the cough. We've never had a cough like this with hayfever, even when we've had asthmatic spells. It's really strange.

Before bed give her some local honey as it outs a coating on her throat. Helped my daughter who had a cough for months.
