Boney lump on child’s sternum

My 8 year old son is tall and thin. He’s very boney! I noticed he’s got a tiny pea sized hard bone thing at the lower end of his sternum. Is this normal or should I get an appointment with gp. He is breathing in in the picture below as it’s more visible that way.

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

I think it's called a xiphoid process, completely normal and we all have them but they are more noticeable in babies/children

Robotik · 19/06/2023 16:35

I think it’s the xiphisternum you can see

Watchkeys · 19/06/2023 16:35

The xiphoid process is below the upside down 'v' created by the bottom of the ribcage, so this looks too high.

If you're worried, see a doctor.

My nearly 6 year old has this! Noticed it about two years ago. It hasn’t changed in that time and causes no pain. I’ve stopped worrying about it. I was anxious when I first noticed it but found info online about asymmetric boney cartilage and things being really common. If you’re worried you should of course go to the GP

My son has this his chest has an odd shape and his rib cage has bent. We had him x-rayed and they said it’s down to him having childhood asthma

Thank you all for your replies! Iv had a good feel and underneath the lump there’s a gap which I’m assuming is the upside down V. He’s happy, healthy and it’s not causing pain I’ll keep a close eye on it before bringing him to the gp.

Aw bless him. My brothers chest looks similar to this, he was told it’s Pectus carinatum. My sons is just a pea size hard lumpy bone as I thought maybe he could be getting the same as my brother but I don’t think so.
