I’ve never been worried but my friend saw my 5 month old on FaceTime last night and mentioned his skull she mentioned a word I can’t quite remember skull synostosis if that’s correctly?

hes always since little had a gap at each side of his front fontanelle going towards his ears on each side and as he’s got older it seems to be less. I never worried as the picture I’ve attached it just felt like that? Like I could feel the coronal suture gap but my friends saying that isn’t normal. Only last week I was at the gp as my son dropped a baby Einstein toy on his head and I was worried the dr had a good feel of his skull and didn’t mention anything at all?

you can see when you go to the side of my son the gap but I always thought this was normal. Should I book back into the drs?

The gap is exactly where they are on the picture but seems to not be as prominent the older he’s getting. Thank you

Sounds normal but a picture would help. Only think I would say his that dehydration can make suture lines and fontanelles look sunken, so make sure your baby isn’t dehydrated

Thank you I can hardly see it on all the pictures of him I’ve taken. But just taken one at the right angle now and it does look quite prominent more so than usual. You mentioned feeds too and he’s definitely due one when I took the picture if that makes a difference. Thanks again

looks completely normal to
me. i'm sure ur gp and health visitor would have mentioned or noted anything, kids heads are prominent in size at this age, i don't think you have anything to worry about. ur wee one is a cutie

What a beautiful little boy you have. You could mention it the next time he has a health check up if you are worried.

I've seen babies with all kinds of different shapes heads over the years and my own daughter had a flat back of the head that whilst she was growing up depending on her hairstyle would look like she had a bit missing but by the time she was an adult her head was perfectly shaped.

pricklythistles · 21/06/2023 13:41

My daughter had something similar, it looked like she had been wearing a plastic headband that had left an indent in her head.

To be honest I worried a little bit but never did anything about it. She is now 11 and a smart ass cookie that doesn't miss a beat! Whatever it was, it hasn't impeded her in any way.

Thank you very much everyone, we happen to be at the gp soon for his skin so will mention it again.

and @pricklythistles thank you I finally have a way to describe it , that’s exactly what it’s like , likes he’s had an headband and it’s left an indent.

Get the hv to check it over, but again it looks normal to me. Forceps in delivery can cause slight indentation too but your hv will know if there's an issue I know ours checked my ds's head over a lot in the beginning.

Charlotteap · 21/06/2023 15:27

@Ilovetea42 thank you , it was a forceps delivery, thinking back they did check a lot in the beginning as he was very bruised

Can't tell anything from that (normal looking) photo. The main view that you want for assessing skull shape is from the above looking down.

Yip294 · 05/11/2024 08:24

Hi @Charlotteap please may I ask if your GP was concerned and how your DS is now? Thank you.

Charlotteap · 19/11/2024 17:25

@Yip294 so sorry for the delayed reply, I did mention it to the gp a couple of times, who really really wasn’t phased. Hes a couple months of two and I’ve just checked and you can still feel a tiny tiny gap but it isn’t noticeable by sight. Actually haven’t thought about it for so long! But he’s completely fine

he does still have a little bit of his soft spot still open but the gp also isn’t concerned as it’s smaller each time
