Sorry if this is the wrong place ? My sister gave birth 2 week ago and her and newborn DD are still in hospital. She is very distressed so is hard to decipher , I’m finally going up to her city tomorrow and hoping to speak to dr myself.

the birth was very traumatic and she says they couldn’t get her out so had to do an emergency c sec. Rushed to care as didn’t look right , had 3 seizures on day she’s born, continued to have odd ones. Finally had some scans the other day and said there is a bleed on brain which will probably stop on its own but also evidence that she has had a stroke? The dr is worried that she will have damage to her frontal lobe ? But Is Waiitng to see a neurologist. My sister is very worried and I don’t think is asking the questions she is and keeps worrying for the future.

does anyone have any advice / similar experience? Anything I should ask the dr when I get there? Sorry for the spelling I wrote this on train thank you xx

I don’t want to raise false hopes or be inappropriately optimistic, OP, but my own second DD suffered a significant cerebral bleed during birth, had an Apgar score of just 1, was unable to breathe, was having seizures despite three different anticonvulsant drugs, had stroked and was hemiplegic (paralysed completely down one side of her body), barely had a heartbeat and had to be intubated and ventilated for ten hours.
She was discharged home from neonatal ICU a week later, and has since graduated uni with a business degree, travelled the world, climbed several mountains, got a well paid job as a senior marketing manager and is getting married next year!
The neonatal brain is still quite plastic and can work around damaged areas from bleeds better than adults can, so there is often more hope for partial or complete recovery.
Your sister delivered in hospital, so the paed crash team and full resus facilities would have been immediately available, which improves the odds. I think you just need to be an emotional support for her, and await the updates from the neonatologist looking after your niece. The clinical picture will be changing daily, and it may be a while before the long term outlook becomes clearer. I hope the news is more encouraging when you get there, but your sister will need your support even more if it is not.

@Babdoc thank you so much for your reply. Your dd really went through a lot didn’t she , bless her. Amazing to hear how well she is doing now. Appreciate your post and I know everhones different but it really did make me feel better. My niece is getting discharged tomorrow and has to return 2 days later for a follow up with a neurosurgeon but the midwife’s are going to come out DailY to keep a check. My sister is still very emotional but I will definitely be there for her to lean on. Thank you again
