8yo boy - wee & poo patches

Hi
Trying to get a sense of how common or uncommon this is… my son is 8 and regularly holds himself for long enough that wee seems to seep out into a patch in his pants. He never completely wets himself in the daytime, but it can often turn into quite a large patch. Less frequently the same thing happens with poo where he’ll ignore the need to go and he’ll have a poo patch in this pants as well. He also wets the bed probably once a week and doesn’t seem to be woken by the need to go. In the daytime it seems that he just doesn’t want to stop what he’s doing so prioritises that over going to the toilet. But in the night it’s obviously involuntary.

It feels like it’s been happening for such a long time I can’t remember when it started but maybe around 6/7. We have been to the GP and he doesn’t have a UTI, GP just suggested regular toilet breaks/reminders. We bought a wetting alarm for the night time which sometimes wakes him up/sometimes doesn’t. Nothing seems to be helping and I’m getting worried about his age and the fact that other children are bound to start to notice this. He is going on his first school residential in a few weeks too.

Anyone had success in dealing with this sort of situation and if so what did you do?!

Could it be something like encopresis? Withholding bowel movements can cause severe blockages which liquid stool can leak around. Can also cause issues with bladder control.

Soiling - ERIC

Soiling is not caused by laziness or naughtiness. We explain the the causes of soiling (or encopresis) and how to stop it happening.

Thanks @Jellycats4life - the GP checked his abdomen too so had assumed that he would have picked up any constipation then but maybe we need another appointment to double check. Thanks for the link, I’ve not come across this site before.
