My daughter has been poorly since last Saturday. So just over a week now. She will be 2 in July.

Started with a raging temp, which gradually turned into a nasty cough. Temperature hasn't gone; ranging from 38-40° all week. Coughing so much that she's been throwing up. Not eaten solids all week but will have breastmilk so she is hydrated.

Called 111 yesterday as couldn't get temp down and cough got bad and they said to take her to pharmacy. Pharmacy said she needed to be seen by a dr. Took her to OOH doctor who said her chest sounded clear and to just go home. I wasn't convinced but trusted him obviously.

Last night she was up all night, Coughing up so much thick mucus, temp has been over 39. At around 4am she was coughing and choked on her mucus (I assume) and she panicked so much; it was really frightening. She then proceeded to be sick a number of times; I think from coughing and the mucus.

She's went back to sleep for an hour perhaps but woke up and her temp is still 38.9. Calpol has been given and she's now with my partner downstairs while i 'try' and get some sleep.

It's worth noting that both my parents who spend time with her have a chest infection (they are separated) and both are currently on antibiotics. Mum had now got pneumonia.

I'm unsure why the doctor said her chest was clear yesterday when her breathing is so rattly and crackly and she's coughing up so much stuff. But I'm not medically trained so maybe that's normal? I put my ear up against her chest and I could audibly hear wheezing and the popping noises last night.

Anyway; what to do? It's over a week now with high temps and this nasty chest. I understand if it's viral there's nothing they can do but surely with the high temps her body is trying to fight some infection?

I don't want to waste anyone's time though. I'm not one to panic or overreact either, I have an older child who was born very prematurely and I am used to horrid bouts of chest infections/croup etc. but something just doesn't seem right here.

It sounds a bit like whooping cough OP, is your DD vaccinated?
My DD had whooping cough just before she turned a year old (she'd had the 1st part of the vaccine but not the 2nd). She started with a normal cold/fever which progressed over a week or so to an awful choking cough.
Key signs of whooping cough are coughing up copious amounts of white/clear frothy phlegm, vomiting from coughing, and seeming relatively well in between coughing episodes. The classic whooping sound doesn't always happen with little ones.
We saw the GP a few times and they weren't worried about her. Eventually they saw one of her coughing spells and swabbed her for whooping cough. There was no treatment as we'd missed the window for them by this point.
She's fine now but the cough lasted a vvvvvvv long time – and she coughed A LOT with every little virus until she was about school age.
Hope your LO feels better soon.
