9 Week Old - Struggling with Tummy Time

Does anyone have any positive suggestions? My 9 week old is struggling with tummy time and I'm starting to feel concerned he isn't going to hit the 3 month milestone of holding his head up. He hates being put on his front and just cries. He'll make the effort to lift his head once sometimes twice and then gives up. I've tried other forms of tummy time such as vertical play, side lying play and back play all of which he prefers but he still isn't quite there with the strength he needs to keep his head steady.

I'm sure my Mum never did tummy time with me and I'm okay but you just worry as a new parent that you're gonna get it all wrong.

I think you're stressing too much! He's only 9 weeks old, he will get there

Both mine hated tummy time so I never did it. Neither have grown up with any developmental issues and met all the normal milestones. You can carry them around over your shoulder and they can practise holding their head up that way.

I'd leave it for a little while, try in very short bursts and pick him up/move him if he gets upset.
It really won't make that much difference to holding his head up.
My DD always hated tummy time - so we barely did any. She still grew up perfectly well. Excellent early fine motor skills and talker, late walker. But unless there's something else going on, they all get there in the end.

Putting them in a carrier or laying them on you count as tummy time. My 4 month old hated tummy time so I would sit him up to help with supporting his own head. He now doesn't mind tummy time and rolls back to front.

The way I see it is, I've never met an adult who can't support their own head due to lack of tummy time.

Don't stress, my first hated it but I kept trying. My second.....I completely forgot about it! I wore both mine in the sling a lot though and that's considered equal to tummy time and does the same thing so if you are worried (I don't think you should be btw) you could try a sling.

Thank you everyone for the suggestions and supportive words. I think I'm sticking with my instinct on this one and do what feels right. Like some of you said; he'll get there and we all turned out just fine

Tummy time is such a weird concept and it stresses so many parents out.

Imagine not being able to lift your head up and being repeatedly chucked face down on the carpet! It would be bloody horrible!

mummyh2016 · 08/06/2023 18:22

My baby was under child's physio (different issue) and they taught me a way for tummy time that he liked, basically cross babies arms across their chest before popping them down. Like how we would perch on our elbows if we were lifting on our front. They won't face plant the floor then.

How is your bubs now with lifting their head? My 9 week old is very much the same right now.

Dont get stressed about it.
My DD hated it.
She didnt like rolling either.

I vivdly remember one day she rolled both ways and i was SO relieved she had hit the milestone and it was done . She didnt do it again for another month or so after!!!

She was confidently walking at a year. All babies are different.
