School attendance pressure

My daughter broke her arm and needed surgery. School are piling the pressure for her to return to school. Consultant said she needed to stay home and not attend school.
It's so upsetting to be hassled at this time. I had a project deadline at work which someone else has needed to cover as I have no childcare. Work have been really understanding but school are a nightmare.

I'm not questioning the consultant but I am curious as to why she's not allowed to return to school. What is the reasoning?

Biscuitandacuppa · 06/06/2023 00:49

My dd had an attendance record of 70% one year because I was in hospital and she had to stay with my parents who live a fair distance away. She is now in year 7 and doing fine.

The schools are under pressure to keep attendance at a certain percentage but they should not be contradicting medical advice! I would contact the headteacher directly and state the advice the consultant has given and that continued pressure to return is not acceptable.

@musicalold
I think it's due to how severe the break was and that they don't want any knocks to the cast until they x-ray on Thursday to check healing is in correct position.

When dd had to have a surgical bone repair for a very serious break, she was not allowed to return to school for about a week after she got out of the hospital. Even when she returned, she wasn’t allowed in the hallways with other students, couldn’t go out at recess, and they had to make sure she was positioned in a protected spot in the classroom. Getting bumped by another child and falling or bumping into a wall could have been catastrophic.

all you need to do is tell the school she will return when she is cleared by her doctor.

Just tell them medical advice is that your DD must stay home at moment due to severity of the break . But she will return to school the minute she gets the ok from the surgeon

Yes my son had surgery after a severe break. Think he had two weeks at home then returned but had to stay in at break and Miss pe. School did a risk assessment before he returned as to how they would safeguard him. If medical advice is not to return to school then that is what should happen. I would ask school to email full risk assessment for dc return and explain they will return on X date. You could also point out school would be responsible if they accept child back early and child had an accident . (I doubt schools insurance would be valid)

Oh op, as of you need the stress of that on top of everything else,

Firstly in terms of her education, she's 7. She'll be fine.

Secondly, I'd email the Head, so there is a record, stating the medical reasons for her staying off, and say you are not going to go against medical advice. That her being off school is difficult with work, that you want her back as much as they do but you're not willing to rely so long term damage by not following medical advice. Be as nice as you can, but also strong.

And finally, just try not to worry, it will be ok 💐

Thank you all. She won't be attending until we get the go ahead from hospital regardless but the school hassle has really upset me and added to what was already a stressful time.
Attendance this yr has been poor after a several different periods of illness, but previously attendance was excellent we have just been unfortunate that she has had scarlet fever, chicken pox and a couple of sickness bugs in short succession.
