Hi Everyone.

My daughter is almost 4 (July). For two years on and off she's had a horrific cough each time she got a viral infection. It would cause chest infections, croup and most recently fluid on her lungs.

Sometimes she would get temperatures and wheezes. But GPs always said "Vitals are fine". So never really did much.

Fast forward to now and our recent trip to A&E. We met a wonderful doctor who actually listened to me. My daughter was hacking up a d coughing so much she knew something was up. She sent us for a lung x-ray which revealed fluid on her lungs.. luckily the blue inhaler she had took away the wheeze slightly so she knew she was responding to the blue inhaler.

She had a brown Inhaler prescribed by Bupa after pushing it and we were giving it to her for a week before hand (I think). She was then put on a wheezy plan .

This is all new to me with asthma etc. I don't know if she has hay fever as well but I was told by a separate GP to try hayfever meds as well.

I suffer badly with anxiety when it comes to the health of my daughter. The second i think shes brewing a cough I get so scared it's going to turn into more other than just a cough. My nerves can't handle anymore croup etc!!

I clam up and disengage and I feel like I'm pushing everyone away from my fear. I'm doing CBT therapy but I don't think it's working for me.

Doctors say "the inhalers should really help with any viral cough etc she picks up". But I always doubt what they say because I've had 2 years of this. I'm not convinced this will help.

Not sure what the point is to my post. Maybe to tell me some positive inhaler stories for coughs.

Realised I've told my life story there. 🤣

Keep her on the brown inhaler consistently and get something for the hay fever. This should mean she is less likely to need the blue inhaler and to get really unwell with a cough.
All my kids had asthma as children and they’ve outgrown it. My eldest was hospitalised three times with chest infections before they gave her a brown inhaler and we got it all under control. Hay fever has a bit impact on asthma so make sure you get something from the GP to tackle it.

Asthma is so confusing in the early years, and scary. I have asthma myself, but it's completely different when it's your child, and the doctors are so vague!

I think you are past the worst though, at 4. She'll be able to communicate better, and her symptoms will settle into a pattern that you can recognise. In my child's case, it definitely got better with age in that way.

My youngest was diagnosed at 2, it's pretty scary when they're young. Both the oldest and I also have asthma but we never had asthma attacks like the young one.

The asthma nurse told us brown inhalers take about a month to fully work, they should help prevent wheezing and colds going constantly to the chest but need to be taken regularly.

As asthma has triggers and is also common along with seasonal allergies an antihistamine is very useful to prevent the need for a blue inhaler.

Inhalers are amazing! The oldest went from constant longlasting viruses and weeks of coughing to them being fairly run of the mill. We literally love our inhalers round here because the quality of life is improved so drastically!

Thank you for your replies!

She's had a husky voice for the past 2 days and I'm terrified its going to turn to croup again. I've heard the brown inhaler can cause a hoarse voice so I'm hoping it's just that. She seems to clear her throat and it goes briefly. I'm actually terrified for tonight incase it turns to croup. Were ment to be going on holiday tomorrow.

The brown inhaler may well be something of a miracle cure for her once she's been on it a while - when I slack at taking my preventer or when I need to change the dose, I get tired, cranky, every cold goes to my chest. When my preventer is working for me I'm... Healthy.

Make sure she takes it. Mine does affect my voice if I don't gargle after - difficult with a little one but maybe a drink would help. Hopefully that and a break in cold season will work well together. Do go back if it doesn't help enough, she may need a different dose or different medication.

Asthma UK have a great website, chat function and helpline, check them out.
