DS MRI after eye clinic -any opticians/drs/ people who have experienced this here?

Hello,

I would be so grateful if anyone has any advice or experience regarding bilateral swelling/pressure on optic nerves. This & possible calcium deposits were identified by spec savers during my ds (13) routine vision check last week. He was referred to the eye clinic at the hospital and was seen yesterday.

They did a sight test, checked pressure in his eyes, colour test & then a scan. The doctor explained that the pressure behind his eyes was higher than usual limits. Ds has no symptoms such as headaches, nausea, balance problems, ringing in ears etc that they asked about.

We have been asked to return in 6-8 weeks for another check & have been told to call them if any symptoms appear. The next appointment will check pressure again, we have been told that if there are no changes then this might be normal for him but if there are then this indicates a problem, they are also arranging an MRI.

I didn’t ask too many questions as didn’t want to worry ds.

I know no one here can tell me what the outcome will be but I’m feeling really anxious & wondered if there are others who have experienced this & what the outcome was please, 6-8 weeks feels like a lifetime at the moment. I’ve seen a few threads here that have been reassuring but I’m trying not to google.

Thank you so much in advance.

Ds had this, as have several other children I've known. All have been fine-they're just checking as they have to.

Thank you so much for your kind reply, I’m sorry you experienced this too but so glad it was all okay. This helps me to feel calmer x

DS has had high pressure in his eyes, it rarely causes any symptoms. His is because of previous eye surgeries so we have a reason for it. He takes medication and it isn't something we worry about, just regularly check up on.

My daughter also had this and I was worried, like you, but it turned out to be normal. I also know two other children who have had the same experience so I think it’s a relatively common thing to be flagged and investigated so please try not to worry.

Thank you so much for your replies, they’ve really helped me to feel a bit calmer about this. MRI is on Saturday so not too long to wait now x

To update; MRI appointment was yesterday at 5.30pm, I wasn’t allowed in with him which surprised me. He got on with it though with no fuss & didn’t seemed anxious at all, really proud of him. Now to wait for results!! I keep panicking my phone will ring, I’m guessing it’ll be tomorrow if there’s anything serious? x

Still waiting on MRI results but received clinic letter today which states:

‘visual acuity 6/6 both eyes & full colour vision. Intraocular pressures were within normal limits. Anterior segment examination was normal. Dilated fundus examination showed full appearance of discs with nasal blurring of disc margin & distinct temporal margins. No spontaneous venous pulsations were seen. OCT retinal nerve fibre layer showed the retinal nerve fibre layer to be elevated.

Due to the OCT appearances & the fundus appearance, we have arranged an MRI scan & will review in 6-8 weeks with the results.’

I was feeling calmer with no urgent call back after MRI last Saturday, now panicking again. Can anyone help interpret the letter I’m not sure what it all means?!

The letter means more or less what they told you in the clinic from the sounds of things - no inherently worrying things but a need to recheck and have the MRI complete. This is not an uncommon scenario because everyone is keen not to miss serious disease in children, but those conditions are rare, thankfully.

Thank you so much Unseenentity.

To update in case it helps others reading;

So relieved to say that MRI was normal which is reassuring.

We have been back to the clinic for 6 week check & all eye tests were completed again. We didn’t get much feedback but they said the need to keep monitoring with next check in 4-6 months, we are to let them know if any symptoms (nausea, headaches etc) present in the meantime.

Im happy they’re keeping a close eye on things but also wish we had a more definitive answer.

thank you for all your kind responses x
