Is her tummy too big?

My 20 month old's tummy is always really big and bloated.
Is this normal? I'm worried but don't know if the doctor would think I'm being stupid.

If this is the end of the day I think it's probably pretty normal.
Just an fyi I'm not sure you meant to upload second pic so you might want someone to remove it xx

Donotgogentle · 16/05/2023 23:15

Is that all the time or after eating?

But yes, I’d go to the GP to get her checked.

QueenOfHiraeth · 16/05/2023 23:16

I wondered this with DD and I was told that big tummies are normal when they are this little as the pelvis is very small so the organs sit higher in the abdomen than they would in older children

purpleflowers88 · 16/05/2023 23:16

I always have to take a photo live to be able to upload one from my album for some reason! I've messaged Mumsnet and said I've accidentally loaded a photo of my legs 😂🤦🏼‍♀️

I do worry as it is constantly that large, and she's actually really light and a bit shorter than children her age.

@purpleflowers88 haha it's the kind of thing I'd do!

I'm sure your little girl is fine but if you're worried no harm in getting her checked xxx

purpleflowers88 · 16/05/2023 23:17

@Donotgogentle it's all the time, I suppose it's maybe slightly bigger after eating but it's nearly always that size.

@QueenOfHiraeth Did you ask your GP? She's actually quite dinky other than her tummy!

A family member toddler had a very bloated stomach and it turned out she was coeliac.

I’m not a HCP but that does look more bloated than usual.

purpleflowers88 · 16/05/2023 23:19

@Grapefruittea as soon as I saw the post it thought oh no! It couldn't just have been of the floor either, I've just got out of the bath and took it 😂🤦🏼‍♀️

I might mention it to the health visitor as she's coming to review her speech. Thank you for putting my mind at rest a bit xx

Mine was always like that from being a toddler. It’s just my body shape unfortunately, I’ve always hated it and it’s always been a problem. I was literally anorexic in my 20s and my stomach still wouldn’t go flat.

purpleflowers88 · 16/05/2023 23:22

@Donotgogentle She is a very sicky baby come to think of it.. she's probably been sick more times than my son had by this age but I always blame sickness bugs as maybe half the time she is, someone else in the family is unwell. She seems to be poorly a lot though with various things.

I'd never thought of it possibly being anything like coeliac or an intolerance, I think I might get her an appointment booked just to see if they want to rule anything out x

@purpleflowers88 I didn't ask my GP but happened to say something about her tummy to friend who is a retired GP and she told me

momonpurpose · 16/05/2023 23:56

I think take her to be seen. To me it looks painfully bloated not"tummy fat"

Lightsbonaza · 17/05/2023 00:14

It always could surprise me how big my children’s tummies got after eating. But it would be after eating. I would take her to be seen to rule out any allergies etc. I would see a doctor rather than a health visitor. please don’t let anyone make you feel stupid for raising concerns about your children or try not to fear that that will be what happens.

SpeedOfLife · 17/05/2023 00:25

My daughter gets a big tummy like this when she is constipated, which is very often.

SleepingStandingUp · 17/05/2023 00:49

My kids have tummies on them at 3 but it's a softer kind of tummy than your little one. Your lo looks more distended than chubby. I'd def get her seen, just to reassure yourself and rule our allergies etc.

Def mention the vomits.

Hows her poo?

HannahHasThePower · 17/05/2023 00:51

Also came on to say take her to the GP and ask if it could be coeliac. The combination of the bloated stomach and failure to gain weight suggests this. It’s ok to make a GP appointment and ask

Isthatascratchonmygrandmother · 17/05/2023 00:52

Get her tested for Coeliac. I made a similar thread a few years ago.

OrderOfTheKookaburra · 17/05/2023 01:00

My DS had a very bloated stomach and it was lactose intolerance. Switching to lactose free milk sorted it quickly. Also sorted out the constipation he had.

purpleflowers88 · 17/05/2023 11:32

Thanks everyone. I've made her a GP appointment just to get them to have a look x

DD always had a big tummy. I kept getting told it was normal, she'd grow out of it etc etc etc. And to be fair, I think it IS very common until they're at least 2 or 3.

However, in DD's case, we figured out she was lactose intolerant when she was about 7. After a few months diary free, the bloating went away....

If your DD is often ill, I would be asking the GP about intolerances or allergies when you see them.

Frogsdinner · 17/05/2023 11:44

I'm jealous of your legs OP

Nap1983 · 17/05/2023 11:46

My DD was always like this as a young child. Slim everywhere but really bloated stomach. She’s gluten intolerant

ReallyShouldBeDoingSomethingElse · 17/05/2023 12:09

At least you have great legs OP 😂

Regarding intolerances, just be aware you have to play the long term game to get proper diagnosis. Don't remove anything from her diet until she has been tested. Two reasons:

  1. some intolerances like gluten can't be diagnosed if you've already reduced it in your diet.

  2. you might be wrong and throw out a food group unnecessarily. A hunch diagnosis by a GP (no tests run) when I was a baby led to me being dairy free for eight years. I have at least one difficult health condition that is highly likely to be down to the particularly hideous soya formula I was given. I turned out to have a low-level soya allergy and had a very uncomfortable childhood with bad eczema and developed bowel issues in my teens which I'm pretty sure are soya-related as whenever I eat it by mistake now the reaction is obviosu.

vicaragechristmas · 17/05/2023 14:47

Looks like my 3yo's tummy. Now I’m wondering whether we need to call the GP! (No major digestive problems here except occasional constipation 🤷‍♀️)
