Going on Holiday with possible Dust mite allergy

Hi Everyone.

This is a long one. I'm exhausted. My daughter has regular coughs. I used to think it was from post nasal drip from getting a cold. (Some it probably is). But her coughs are horrific.

Being passed off at the doctors because "her chest is clear". Doesn't help when the cough is so so bad it keeps her awake for weeks.

For a year I've been fighting for something to be done or look at her chest etc.

Since starting preschool she's had more bugs. Chest infections, croup and most recently fluid on her lungs which have all caused the most horrendous cough. Luckily we saw a lovely doctor in A&E yesterday who actually took the time to x-ray her lungs.

She found fluid and has prescribed antibiotics and inhalers and 3 days of steroids. She has she more than likely has asthma due to being 5 weeks early her lungs are suseptable.

I'm also thinking she has a dust mite allergy or something. I remember we went on a caravan holiday and she started coughing in the bedroom until I cleaned it thoroughly. Which should have sent alarm bells ringing but I obviously forgot about following up at home.

We got an ENT appointment through Bupa to hopefully see if there is anything else going on with Adenoids or tonsils or post nasal drip. Hoping he will be able to refer us to an Allergist as well to finally get all the bases covered so we can actually put a plan on place. I don't know if it's hayfever/dust mite/ pets etc etc.

That's the back story..

We're due to go on a couple of UK holidays.

My question is.. how do I go about protecting her on holidays from dust mites. Cleaning will be done in her bedroom when we go into the lodge but what about bedding etc!? Carpet cleaning!

I feel so out of my depth right now I'm struggling to keep my head above water with everything that's going on.

Please help!

Thank you!

I have a dust mite allergy- been tested by immunologist in hospital as suffered miserably until then. For me it’s easily controlled by fexofenadine I get on prescription. Cleaning etc only reduces, nothing gets rid of it apart from antihistamine.

Our 4 year old has similar. TBH there’s not a lot that can be done to control it on holiday. I find hotels better than self catering as their sheets must be washed at high temps. You can get anti dust mite cases for pillows/mattresses/duvets you can take with you as bedding is by far the worst culprit since they’re directly on it for several hours, but I mostly have to rely on anti-histamines. It seems to take a few days to build up to bad levels of reaction so usually our holidays are short enough that’s it’s bearable for him.

Thank you!

I'm hoping to get her tested for allergies to be sure. Then I hope she will be prescribed something for it. Took me 8 hours to deep clean today. It's not sustainable each week 😭😭.

Anti histimines. You can also buy special encasing pillow cases, mattress cases and duvet covers. But I think it’s the an anti histimines that are better if you are going on holiday.
