Child hearing voices

My daughter is 8 and came to me yesterday sobbing that in head she could hear whispering words and numbers that would end up shouting. She doesn't know what the words were saying, but it was clearly upsetting. I put the tv on to see if distraction helped, it did until I turned it off. This morning she said it happened again but for not as long. She has a cold and a slight temperature the day before, but not during those episodes. What could this be? Im thinking I need to call the doctors. Does anyone have any ideas or experiences what this could be?

It could be anxiety about something. Is school life and home life OK as far as you are concerned? Is it OK from her point of view?

I would keep a record and make a gp appointment. Whatever it is you need to know what it is to help reassure her. Hopefully the gp can at least determine if she requires further investigation and help give guidance on resources for her.

Being as she's had a temp it could just be auditory hallucinations. My child had this whenever suffering with an ear infection or eczema in ear. His sounded like cats meowing, wasps and spiders in his head (his words). Does it happen at any particular time? Dropping off to sleep?

Thank you for your responses. I have asked her is anything worrying her. She seems to be ok, school is good, but I'll keep an eye on that. She still has a cold and does suffer with eczema all over, I don't know about inside her ear. I'll definitely keep a record and try to get her into the doctors.
The noises seem to be when there is quiet.

Yes, if she's poorly she could be having a flare up. My child really did suffer, especially hearing things (it scared me at first) due to eczema flare up in ears.

I had a telephone appt with the GP today and he wants to refer her to mental health services. I asked about ears and he said it will have nothing to do with it! I'm having a face to face appt with them on Friday and he said he would check the ears to satisfy me it's not that.
She had 2 more episodes today, it's very worrying :(

Hi op - just wondered if you have an update at all, as my 8 year old keeps telling me about the same thing and it's obviously a bit of a worry. Thanks

slithytoveisascientist · 19/05/2023 03:15

I used to get this, still do when I'm super tired or stressed. It was stress/anxiety. Horribly upsetting.

At that age it's likely illness or anxiety. I'd work on labelling emotions and recognising physical symptoms of illness and not refer to the noises at all at this stage. You can also do things like teach distraction and deflection. If your child says it happens again and can tell you what the voice says that might offer a clue. For instance, if the theme of it is something negative about the child/a situation they're in you can help with that. Teaching the child to thank the voice and recognise it as their internal worry alert system etc.
