Good stuck in chest

My son 17 is currently struggling with food stuck in his chest which is causing sever waves of pain. It’s only happened within the hour after we had fish fingers and chips for lunch. He’s trying to be sick now but the pain in waves feels like a stabbing griping pain every few minutes. His airway is not effected but he’s in pain. We have tried to push it down with water. He’s got a hiatus hernia I’m wondering if something happened where it is. He’s never had this before

I’ve tired to speak to the GP about to just take him to A&E if it does go by 1530. Wondering if anyone has similar experience or throughs

Sounds like a food bolus OP, medical emergency! I'd just go to A&E.

Yes definitely A and E. It can dislodge then end up as a choke hazard so be ready for that possibility.

Can he drink coke? That’s what the doctor told me once when similar happened

It could be an oesophageal spasm. It feels like you have something stuck in your chest and it's extremely painful. It's caused by acid coming up the oesophagus instead of staying in the stomach.
It will resolve after an hour or so. You can prevent by taking omeprazole.
Obviously I am not a doctor so I would get him checked to make sure nothing is indeed stuck. Poor lad.

@Itcouldhappenabishop I think you have hit the nail on the head. It was very much like this. Never happened before we do have Omeprazol for him he doesn't take it as he should (I know he should but try telling a 17 year old kid...). I will raise it to the GP incase the hernia has moved or gotten bigger but like you I am not an expert in that department. Thank you all for your comments

I had oesophageal spasm which didn't resolve until I was admitted to a ward and given a muscle relaxant by IV.

That was due to me not taking heartburn seriously. I now take Lansaprazole like I should!

CraftyIrishMamma · 04/05/2023 22:52

Why hasn't his hernia been fixed?

Shock that must have been horrendous!
The worst one I had was a a couple of hours, I couldn't swallow my own saliva and kept retching. I'm militant about my omeprezole now!!

Thank you for this. Its not an operation they do just to fix it apparently so he has to live with it @CraftyIrishMamma if it keeps getting worse we will go back to the gp

@BabyST

Yes, that’s the chronically underfunded NHS for you. 🙁
As he’s suffering recurrent pain, keep pushing them to get it fixed or maybe look into paying privately?

They wouldn’t fix my post baby hernia in the U.K. either for reasons entirely due to funding according to my previous GP.

When I moved to Ireland and mentioned it to my new GP (at the end of a consultation about a completely different issue), he referred me for a consultation and I had it repaired at the local (University) Hospital within 3 months of my initial GP appointment.

@CraftyIrishMamma thank you I have dropped you a PM I am actually Irish too living in the UK. That's crazy quick I will deffo head back to the GP with him
