If your baby had chicken pox did they get it again?

6 month old has chicken pox and am reading mixed things online as to whether they generally get it again or develop immunity at this age. So was wondering what other people's experiences are?

My siblings both had CP twice, mild the first time & a little worse the second. I had it horrendously and only had it once.
DC had it horrendously at 18 months -touch wood-not had it again and now late teens.

My son had chickenpox at 10 weeks when he caught it from his sister. When he was 5 he developed a strange rash and we'd no idea what it was. Took him to the doctor who diagnosed shingles. That had never entered my head as it was usually something I'd associate with older people who'd had chickenpox as a child.
Neither of them have had anything else since and they're now in their 30s.

Yes, my DD had it at 3 months when older siblings had it, then caught is again a couple of years later.

Saisong · 25/04/2023 10:48

My DS got shingles at 18m, which meant he had chicken pox some time previously - but we didn't notice (was probably one of the unidentified virus times that passed off after a slight temp and bit of calpol!)

NoviceGardner · 25/04/2023 10:59

Thanks, hadnt really thought of shingles as a possibility. This is a fairly heavy dose of chicken pox with lots of spots (caught from older sibling) so hoping it builds some immunity at least 🤞🏼

My DD had chicken pox at just under 2 years and then had a mild case of it again at 5 years. Confirmed both times by the pharmacist.

NotEvenSlightlyReasonable · 25/04/2023 11:35

DD had it at about 18 months and again at about 3 years. Mild first time, horrendous second. Apparently a significant number (>10% iirc) of cases are second time.

wildinthecountry · 25/04/2023 12:12

My oldest son had chicken pox when he was 6 month old ,younger sibling had it when oldest was a teenager , never caught it so.

dementedpixie · 25/04/2023 12:18

Ds had chickenpox at 5½ months and shingles age 3. Apparently childhood shingles is more common if they get CP under 1 year.

TakeMe2Insanity · 25/04/2023 12:22

My DC had it at 18months and has not had it since. Now 7.

hiredandsqueak · 25/04/2023 12:26

Dd1 had chicken pox within a fortnight of being born, just half a dozen pox and has never had it again. As an adult she has had shingles. Dd2 had chicken pox twice both before she was two, first time it was just a few pox and second time a proper covering.

Mushroomofficeglass · 25/04/2023 12:36

Dc1 had at 11 months and 2.5 years.
Dc2 had at 3.5 years.
Dc3 had at 3 and 4 years.

Anecdotally, it seems to be more about how badly they have it, rather than how young - people who get it mildly the first time are more likely to get it again.

Yes I did hear that too. I assumed she'd get a mild dose at her age as read they are protected by mothers antibodies but she has a lot of spots so hoping it might give her immunity. More so than older child did a couple of weeks ago.

My sister got it extremely mildly at about 5 months old and hadn't had it since. She has had shingles twice though, don't know if that's related to her age when she got chickenpox

Newusernameaug · 25/04/2023 13:32

Yea ds had it twice aged 2 and 5 ish

MargaretThursday · 25/04/2023 16:04

DD got it at 6 months when still fully breastfed and had it very badly. She was covered inside and out with spots.
She's not had it again, despite various friends and brother getting it.

Although I didn't get it until I was 20, despite various friends and sister having had it. And I never found where I'd caught it from either!

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 25/04/2023 18:25

Dd had it at 8 months and hasn't had it again. Shed's 11.5 now.

cocksstrideintheevening · 25/04/2023 19:08

Dts had it twice, first time about 18 months old, not bothered, not many spots.

Got it again age 5 and it was horrific ended up in hospital with one with queried sepsis.

This was 12 years ago, I didn't know about the vaccine.

ToThineOwnSelfBe · 25/04/2023 19:39

DS1 had it when he was six months old. Covered from head to toe in tiny spots. Then he got it again at about six years old when DS2 had it, just a few big spots and over very quickly. The GP told us that if the first case is very, very strong when they are very young, the immune system isn't always able to build enough antibodies to effectively inoculate you from it.

AnnoyedByAlfieBear · 25/04/2023 19:57

My DD had it at around 5 weeks old fairly mildly. She's 8 now and despite being exposed at least 3 times that I can think of, she's not had it again.

Jowak1 · 25/04/2023 20:20

My daughter at 1 year old got chicken pox then when she was older about 5 got it again but the second time it wasn't as bad.

hairdresserbreakup · 25/04/2023 20:24

My younger DS had chicken pox at about 10 weeks despite being exclusively breast fed, then shingles when he was about 6. My eldest has never had CP as far as I'm aware!
