Dd fainting, should I be concerned?

I need to start by saying I myself faint. Usually linked to feeling unwell (and virus type illness) and it’s usually my body screaming at me I need rest. DD’s fainting however is at times when she’s in good health.

She’s 11, was premature and born weighing 5lb 2oz, was resuscitated at birth and in scbu for 10 days. Since then, no other health issues. She’s now 11 and in the last year has fainted 3 times - twice mid playing sport (running type activity) and once on a plane during landing when she was out for 5 minutes. The sports times were both at school and I have limited info. She’s not yet showing signs of puberty.

i guess I’m now over worrying address got an issue with her heart as fainting isn’t very common in dc. I didn’t faint until my 20s

My daughter faints a lot. She’s 18 now. I used to get calls from school to get her and it was so frustrating! She often didn’t drink enough which I think didn’t help.

Xrays · 24/04/2023 23:06

I would get her to have a check up and an ecg, it won’t do any harm and if there’s anything weird going on it’s better to have it found out.

Suzi888 · 24/04/2023 23:08

Agree with X-rays. I have low bp but never fainted as a child.

Jellycats4life · 24/04/2023 23:10

Bless her. I think you’re either prone to fainting or you’re not - I’m a fainter.

I would definitely speak to a doctor about it but not because I think it’s anything serious.

Roundandnour · 24/04/2023 23:13

I would get her checked out.
I used to feint a lot as a child (still do but thankfully decreased). Very low iron levels which aren’t all contributed to bleeding.

My daughter fainted out of the blue and was taken to hospital as I called an ambulance. They did an ecg and heart scan so I would def follow this up. Particularly as it occurred during sport. All was fine for my daughter in the end.

ShowOfHands · 25/04/2023 07:21

My daughter is a fainter and it started at 11. She has a diagnosis and it's manageable but it's part of a larger condition. She was diagnosed in hospital.

I'd go to the GP to try and find out if there's a bigger picture.

Gabby10 · 25/04/2023 07:24

I use to faint as a child and after tests it turned out I had a hole in my heart which needed repairing. I'd get her to docs to get some tests done. The GP could hear the murmur the hole was causing so was sent straight for a scan and had op about 6 months later. That was 25 years ago and I had keyhole surgery through groin and not had any issues since. It could also be low blood pressure, I had a friend who this happens to when her bp drops too low x

HappyKoala56 · 25/04/2023 07:31

I would get her checked out at the gp.

I am a fainter, although I have got better as I've got older. It is usually when I feel very ill or when I'm overly nervous. DS is exactly the same, as are my dad and aunt. I did take ds to the doctor when he started fainting and the first thing he asked was if I had a tendency to faint and he basically said it runs in families. He did check ds over to give me some piece of mind though, it's worth doing.

She needs an assessment by a paediatric cardiologist. Fainting during exercise can be a sign of a potentially dangerous heart rhythm disorder. Speak to you GP today.

AuditAngel · 25/04/2023 07:54

DD had a series of “fainting fits” over a 2 week period, her blood pressure was low, but that runs in the family. 18 months later she started having seizures.one of her types of seizures looks like fainting. Doctors have concluded that the fainting fits may have been seizures,

cocksstrideintheevening · 25/04/2023 08:15

Get her checked out. I fronted a lot from about that age but it was because my blood pressure dropped when I stood up. I would be concerned that it happened during sport

DontMakeMeShushYou · 25/04/2023 08:56

It wouldn't hurt to get checked out.

Could she have been stretching at the time? Fainting is not as uncommon in teenage girls as you might think and stretching/putting their arms above their head can trigger an episode.

TeenLifeMum · 25/04/2023 13:38

Gp appointment arranged for tomorrow and I’ve called school as she doesn’t really remember what happened (dh picked up and didn’t ask all the questions I would). She seems healthy but best to check. Thanks all.

I started fainting at around 10 and it still happens now in my 30s. For me it's linked to getting overwhelmed by emotion, if I get shocking news, injure myself etc. It can also be low blood pressure related to low salt intake. I had all the tests done on my heart to rule out heart issues though, so I'm sure the GP will recommend it.

Exact same thing to happen to me. I have a heart condition called LQTS. I only got diagnosed because of fainting. The fact it's happening with sports please get her heart checked OP.

AuditAngel · 27/04/2023 14:51

TescoFinestMyArse DD2’s friend has LQTS, diagnosed after family testing when her mum was fainting.

Same here.

I was diagnosed with Neurocardiogenic Syncope type 2b
