Cyst at site of healed ear piercing?

DD age 8 had her ears pierced 2 years ago, but they despite following all the aftercare protocol and keeping in for 6 weeks etc they kept healing when taken out for a few days for school. So she decided to let them heal up.

On one of her lobes you can feel the tiny bump where it has healed. But every few months (even 2 years later!) It grows, becomes sore and inflamed and eventually pops and pus comes out (sorry TMI). It is then fine again for a few months.

I thought it may be a cyst with a sac that keeps refilling but I asked the GP a few weeks ago when we were there for an unrelated issue and he looked with the light, and said he couldn't see a sac just old scarring.

Any ideas? Has this happened to anyone else? She's now decided she wants her ears pierced again but I've said no until she's older and we are sure it's all healed! But don't want this to go on forever!

Where did she get them done? Gun or needle?

take to a specialist tattoo/piercing place. They will advice best plan on re-piercing.

I have this. Exactly as you described. Got my ears pierced back in the 90s with a gun. No probs at all but let them close up in my mid twenties. I can get earrings in but not out and I'm too squeamish to push. I want to get them repierced but will go to a proper piercing place to ask for their advice. This hasn't happened with my piercings done by needles.
Every few months my ear lobes get a bit hot, look red and I can feel large lumps which can be squeezed. When they are 'normal' I can still feel a tiny lump in each site but they look fine.
No help to you but at least you know it happens to others.

They were pierced with a gun at a well recommended beauty salon by a trained lady who I have no issues trusting as I know her personally, through a friend - so may have a chat with her.

@LadyCathdeBourgh that is reassuring...in a way! Although not wanting it to continue for years! Interesting it didn't happen for you when needles were used.

I'll definitely not be rushing into re-piercing but will research thoroughly when the time comes.

with respect to your friend, however well trained she may be, piercings should not be done with a gun. Was she trained specifically for under 12’s?

were you told to twist the piercing or leave it alone?

speak to an establishment that pierces with needles. Tattoo and piercing places are your best bets- ours has two piercers who are certified and additionally trained to pierce under 12’s. They have much more experience and training than beauty salon or shop staff.

@Cantthinkofaname2203 I can't remember the specific advice now as it was so long ago. And I didn't realise there was seperate training for under 12s but I do know that children are always directed there in our town, although I know I can't rely on that.

That's really useful information, thankyou I will do that.
