Virus or asthma?!?

My little boy, age 4, started with a cough 3 weeks ago. It started off as a dry cough and now sounds wet. It wasnt really bothering him but i took him to the drs on Monday after he had been crying on Sunday eve saying his ear was sore. By the morning he wasn't saying that anymore but we went to the appt anyway. His ears, throat, chest etc was checked and it was concluded that everything looked good/chest sounded clear and it was just a virus. By Thursday the cough sounded even worse and was more frequent and he also had a mild fever at times so I took him back and saw a different dr. The first thing this dr asked was if there was a family history of asthma (there's not) but I explained he had had an episode of viral induced wheeze 18 months ago. He was given a blue inhaler at the time to use during that episode but hasn't needed it since. I do have an oximeter have noticed the levels have dipped a bit during sleep this week since the wetter cough began.
Anyway this dr said to give the blue inhaler 2 puffs 4 times a day and see if improves. Also gave a brown j hauler to try for 2 weeks if I felt necessary. I have no idea abt asthma so I dnt know of this is necessary, he doesn't cough at all during the night. He is snotty this week so I'm thinking ita viral but has anyone experienced similar? I'm giving the blue inhaler but don't know if I should start with the brown but don't want to give it unnecessarily. Any help greatly appreciated.

My 6 year old has been the same as your son. She was given a inhaler she coughs more when she goes outside and when she runs. We have been given a peck flow to record her numbers aswell. Only difference is i have asthma and she hadnt been like i am with mine.

I’m surprised the GP didn’t instruct you to use the preventer, rather that if you felt it necessary.
I would’ve thought you would’ve been using the preventer x2 puffs twice a day. Was preventers and relievers clearly explained to you.

He did at 1st but I think because I looked surprise and said oh is this a long term thing I thought he just had a virus he said we'll if you think it's a virus just wait and see if it gets better or give rhe brown if you feel it necessary. The inhalers weren't explained at all no. He has had a fever the last couple of nights requiring alternate calpol and nurofen and he has been off his food. This has come after having the cough nearly 4 weeks. So still not sure what's going on.
