Strange rash, no other symptoms

Our six month old DD came out in some marks on her lower left leg yesterday. Although she had no other symptoms and was feeding well and perfectly happy we did the glass test and they didn’t disappear so on to the hospital we went.

They examined her said she looked okay but that they would take some bloods to rule out anything scary. The bloods came back negative to our relief and they said it must be a viral rash or something.

Still pretty worried tbh. My partner thinks they’ve faded since yesterday but I’m just wondering what they could be. They’re flat, completely smooth and dark red. Do these types of things just come and go like this?

Any advice appreciated.

Hi @Thinkingpose - both my DC had this. My DS would get them all the time and we were admitted to hospital more times than I care to count. Sometimes they would say it was due to a virus, sometimes things would rub on his skin and cause them, other times then would appear randomly with no explanation! Each time he would have to have a blood test and be monitored (I think we had at least 8 blood tests in the end?!). He seems to have outgrown them now (started when he was about 2 and he's now 10). My DD would get them but not anywhere as bad as DS and we put that down to something rubbing on her skin (she had to have a couple of blood tests). The rashes took a few days to disappear, but could be on their legs, arms, backs, chests etc.

The main info we were given that if DC presents with a non-blanching rash, seek medical attention straight away. If medics decide DC is fine, you need to monitor (make sure they aren't sick, lethargic etc). If they get more poorly, go straight back to ED. Otherwise, treat it as one of those things!

What I got into the habit of was circling the rash in pen and taking photos of them, so I could tell if it spread / got worse - it drove my DH mad but because the medics kept thinking DS had leukaemia, it helped me see if his rashes spread / got worse.

** forgot to say, my DC always had petechial rashes - basically, little blood vessels break under the skin causing the blood to pool in little dots on the skin and these rashes do not blanch. It can be the sign of something awful but, in a lot of cases like ours, it can be nothing.

Thanks @Blossomandblooms. Good to know that it’s not something terrifying.

It’s just weird to be told that although it looks serious and that they don’t know what it is, it’s still nothing to worry about!

It really is, especially when no one else I know had experience with them! My stomach would go in knots whenever I spotted one as the consultant on the children's ward had always told me to go to ED whenever DS had a rash. DS was never unwell with them, thankfully, but if he had I would be racing him to ED. Hope your LO's rash clears up soon (it should get paler each day and be gone within around a week of first appearing)

Ah, that’s good to know about it taking a week or so. It’s been two days and definitely paler than it was.

Thanks again. Really appreciate the info.
