Son sleep walking!

My son is nearly 6. I’ve just found him
sleep walking for the first time. He was standing at the top of the stairs swaying back at fourth! Bloody hell I just keep thinking he could have fallen down the stairs…..
now I’m on edge and can’t get back to sleep. What do I do ffs put a baby gate at the top of the stairs!?

My ds woke with one leg over the stairgate at that age. On other occasions, he has walked down the stairs in his sleep quite happily! He is now 15 and about to do D of E on a campsite with his mates! I am concerned!!

Serious point. You do need to risk assess when in new places. As a sleepwalker I’m safe (for some values of the word) at home but have nearly walked out of a first floor window abroad (those big shutter type ones in France). We now close any windows I could get out of in strange places. Sorry.

My DS has sleep walked a couple of times - once (and very luckily!) DH were watching a film in the lounge when DS (aged 7) came downstairs, unlocked the front door and was about to walk out. He was totally out for the count but it was a close call! We then installed a lock at the top of the door

I was a sleep Walker. One time my parents caught me heading out the front door with a pair of scissors. My son has also been known to sleepwalk although this is lessening in his teens. We were on holiday in Spain a couple of years ago and he escaped the hotel room in the middle of the night (he was sleeping with his brother in the lounge whilst we were in the bedroom). I found him 5 floors down on the hotel stairs, heading back up to our room! Bit of a nightmare. I have to say - he has never fallen or hurt himself - I do believe sleepwalkers are somewhat in control of their physical actions.

Have you ever sought advice from doctors on sleepwalking for children? NHS website seems to suggest nothing they can really do for children. Wondering what you all did to help.

We had a gate in the hall round the corner from the stairs but preventing access from rooms to stairs for years. iIt was effective and had no negative effects.

My nanna has one as she has an open indoor staircase and could easily lose balance when going from her room to the bathroom.

Sensible imo

Great nasanas. Thank you. How long did the sleepwalking last? Or still in it?
