Worms Help!

So I've just discovered we have worms in the house, and because I didn't pick up on the signs, we've probably had them for a very long time.

DD constantly has a tummy ache, has done for absolutely ages, shes at school, nursery before that. I've taken her to the Dr's so many times to no avail. She's started complaining of soreness and woke up the last couple of nights with redness and soreness. She's not complained of an itchy bottom, although to my despair I have tonight and noticed a mild tummy ache.

I've done a google search and seen you can get over the counter meds for it so will pick some up. Does everyone in the house need to take it? DH isn't going to be up for it, and my step daughter also won't take it - She's 18 and never washes hands after using the toilet (a problem I have raised I don't know how many times over the years). DS is at nursery and has sensory issues, getting him to take it successfully is unlikely.

Do I also have to disinfect all surfaces and boil wash everything?

It's the middle of the night, I've just realised and now can't sleep as I just want to get it sorted now!

Look up threadworms on the nhs website. It is all very well explained on there.
Also read the leaflet in the package when you buy the tablets.
Everybody in the house needs to be treated, twice.
Towels and bedding needs to be washed on a hot wash.
No sharing of towels.
Hand washing frequently and before eating.
Keep nails short and use a nail brush.
Wash fruit before eating.
Don't encourage handling food and putting it back.
Hoover house thoroughly.
Wear knickers at night.
Wash underwear and pjs daily.
All children get worms usually as soon as they start nursery.

Show DH and DSD pictures of threadworms.

You all need to take Ovex at least twice
Vaseline around the anus, tight pants, wash, hoover & wipe as much as you can
Can take over 4 days for any sort of result
Get a stock of over from an online pharmacy for future occasions
My kid would have them all the time, I woul dose at least once a term.
Don't worry it's common but people either don't talk about them or don't realise they are infected... your kid got them from somewhere!

Thanks for the replies - looks like a busy day tomorrow! DH will hopefully take the meds, although it'll be under duress, step daughter i know won't (we have an awful lot of challenges here). We'll treat once a term and stock up. I don't understand why there isn't more communication about it out there.

A single treatment requires 2 doses, I think it is about 10 days apart. Check the instructions.

greenspaces4peace · 05/04/2023 04:48

if you store your toothbrushes in the bathroom, make sure you sanitize the toothbrush holder and replace with new toothbrushes.
toilet flush handle and bathroom taps as often as possible, bathroom door knobs too.
just visualize what you touch after a bm.

endofthelinefinally · 05/04/2023 04:55

Yes, and always put the lid down when you flush.

Luupy · 05/04/2023 06:01

Didn't think about toothbrushes 🙈 thanks for all the replies, will start cleaning everywhere now before everyone gets up.

Is there is a treatment that's more like a medicine that I can put I a syringe, rather than a drink or tablet? Ds is 3, if I give him something that's dissolved in water, he'll not drink it

It is an orange flavoured chewable tablet.
You could crush it and put it in almost anything they like to eat.
A spoonful of jam?

Luupy · 05/04/2023 06:38

Good idea, thanks!

great advice from previous posters.
hopefully this will solve the tummy issues.

show dh the nhs page, maybe then he will be willing to engage.

tbh I founds worms so much easier to treat than headlice...

good luck!

feliciabirthgiver · 05/04/2023 07:50

Just to say there is a liquid version of ovex which you can syringe or mix with yoghurt etc like you would calpol. Don't worry you will all be fine.

Luupy · 05/04/2023 10:18

Thanks, I've managed to get DD and myself dosed up, DH clearly feels a bit put out and hasn't taken the ovex, I've left it out for him. He won't look at the nhs website unfortunately, says I'm being a hypochondriac. Will dose up DS in the morning, he's now at nursery and I'm at a,late meeting tonight so won't get chance before then.

I think I'm just going to have to do what I can, step up the cleaning and ovex once a term with those that will cooperate.

What the heck is wrong with your DH? Is he always such a baby?!

6namechang3 · 05/04/2023 10:31

I am not convinced the cleaning makes much difference. Everyone in the household taking 2 doses of ovex is the only way to get rid of them.

Luupy · 05/04/2023 11:47

When it comes to things like this @Labtastic unfortunately he can be. So frustrating.

I've managed to get most of us dosed up on ovex - dh after a bit of a barny unfortunately. He won't raise the subject with dsd, no one seems to like raising anything uncomfortable with her which is frustrating to say the least. I've done the best I can and trying not to get too annoyed about the situation!
