Keratosis pilaris

I’m looking for some dermatology advice, not sure I’m in the right place?
My 10 year old son has quite rough skin. From what I’ve researched, it’s possibly Keratosis pilaris. It’s tiny flesh coloured bumps. It’s not majorly noticeable unless in s good light but it’s the feel. He’s had this for quite a few years and I’ve tried different moisturisers. It affects his arms but is across his shoulders now with dryer patches on his chest. His face also has tiny flesh bumps now which feel very rough with his skin feeling very dry under his chin.
He is now mentioning the feel of his skin and I really want to find something that works. We’re using Aveeno moisturiser at the moment.
Does anyone have any advice? I’m wondering if the doctors would help?

On a different note , now he’s growing up he’s also getting spots on his nose which he’s mentioning- any skincare advice here too would be very much appreciated!

following as my daughter has this. I have it too although it's got a bit better as I've got older.

I've seen cera ve smoothing cream recommended before. I wish I could say I recommended it but I always forget to apply it

I have this and so does my daughter. I have noticed things like diet and hormones make it worse. Haven't found any creams that improve it as yet.

I have mild kp. You need something with salicylic acid in it. I actually use a salicylic acid face wash regularly and extend down to my arms. You can get specific creams too but I personally am terrible at remembering to use them but will always remember to use the face wash in the shower. So the best thing is to use something they will use regularly.

I have this.

Cerave is the best I've used but even if my skin feels softer, it's still very bumpy. Mine is worse on my arms (tops particularly) and tops of my legs.

I've resigned myself to the fact that I'll never have the same smooth and fresh skin that others have.

On the flip side, dry KP skin does tend to keep spots at bay!

Bio oil can work

Emeraldsrock · 30/03/2023 23:24

This is the face wash I use: CeraVe SA Smoothing Cleanser with Salicylic
I think they do a body wash too which might be better for a kid that doesn’t need to use a face wash but not sure if available in the uk.
The cream is the SA smoothing cream.

Some people swear by Ameliorate, but I couldnt get my son to use it reliably. Cerave salicylic acid face wash is good.

Precipice · 30/03/2023 23:33

Honestly, you just have to live with it. You can't make it go away.

Moisturising will improve the skin and make it less rough, but the little red dots of KP will still remain.

Berlinlover · 30/03/2023 23:36

I’m 46 and have had KP since childhood, I inherited it from my great grandmother. I’ve accepted that I’ll have it forever.

GayforMoleman · 30/03/2023 23:37

Another vote for CeraVe SA. Doesn't work long term for me but does in a pinch for a few days once in a while (esp after shaving legs/arms) when already prone to this

Saisong · 30/03/2023 23:41

My DD has this and always has. We had some success with Ameliorate - but you have to be very consistent. Also it was too harsh for her face, so used Aveeno there. It seems to be marginally better now she has started puberty (but that might be the frequent hot baths).
When she was small it was on her ears, cheeks and eyebrows as well as upper arms and chin - it didn't bother her that much though.

this may sound a little rogue but nizoral (the anti dandruff shampoo) is so great for preventing texture on the face, you just use it like you would a face mask so like 5-10 minutes on problem areas ! or I’d recommend using a salicylic acid cleanser possibly (the inkey list has a really good one) but make sure to moisturise too, possibly something gentle like cetraben (especially for the dryness)
