Sleep Apnea - Experiences Please

As per my name my daughter has been experiencing a lot of difficulties with enlarged tonsils and adenoids. This has been having a knock on effect in terms of development. I have did some research and have found many things which ring true for us.

Most worryingly I think her cognitive development is being affected. She only has a few words and her memory seems to be poor, i.e. we were looking at flashcards of words I know she knows well and she came across one and tapped her head as if to say 'I know this but can't remember'. I said the word and she immediately say it after.

Just wondering if anyone could share how their child's cognitive development was before surgery and also if it improved at all after.

Really grateful for any replies from an exhausted, desperate parent.

Hi, we went through this exact thing with my daughter.

Had an operation to remove tonsils, adenoids and fit grommets

She went from moderately deaf, breath holding, sleep apnea and exhausted child who only spoke around 10 words at 3 to a completely different child who spoke sentences within 2 weeks

It was amazing - recovery from the op is rough though warning

This is amazing, I really hope this is going to be the tonic for us.

Did your daughter have any other problems such as balance? My daughters has gotten so irritable over the last few months (coupled with a couple of heavy colds) so her attention and focus has really dipped.

I think it is pure exhaustion, she 'sleeps' 12-14 hours at night. But is yawning literally when she is having her breakfast 30 mins after waking.

Has she had her hearing checked?
The balance could easily be because of glue ear

Yes she has had grommets in already but her balance still really fluctuates depending on colds etc.

Balance is often impacted. After my 3yo had grommets in and adenoids and tonsils out I suddenly realised that I had never seen him jump, or balance along curbs etc only when he started to do so post op

I'm the same, my little girl definitely gets worse when she is suffering from a bad cold.
