10 antibiotics at 1 years of age

Hi All,

My baby boy has just turned one two weeks ago. He has had a minimum of 10 antibiotics since he was born. I'm extremely worried about the amount of times he has been sick and not sure I can keep allowing him to have antibiotics over and over again. His GP isn't great and often refuses to see him or check him over when sick but he prescribes him an antibiotic after a very short phone call and this is becoming the norm.

So far, he has been diagnosed with Flu A (hospitalised for two weeks), he had croup twice, bronchitis, bronchiolitis, three UTI's, strep A, chicken pox, takes inhalers daily for suspected asthma (too young to diagnose) and has allergies (milk, cats, grass, mould).

He was in A&E all day today with another virus and had rigors today due to 41 temperatures and blood in his urine which we are waiting on the sample to come back from the lab.

He is genuinely sick at least once per week. My GP isn't taking me seriously and the hospital agreed he's had too many antibiotics in a year.

Sorry for the long post. But I'm really asking if someone can guide me in the right direction. I'm really worried about my sons overall health is d worried it could be something more serious causing all these bacterial and viral infections.

What advice can anyone give on what to do or who to seek medical advice from other than the GP. Maybe he is just unfortunate and hasn't anything serious wrong but I'd like to put my mind at ease. Are there other people out there experiencing similar?

Thanks in advance

Oh bless you, your poor wee boy. I recently saw a herbalist about my 4 and 7 year old whom I feel have unusually high levels of illness, I’ve been worried about their immune systems. She took a history of both from birth and I was shocked at the amount of antibiotics when I went through it. Her advice was all about helping the gut biome recover from this. You can google but plenty fresh fruit and veg, live yoghurt (make sure not pasteurised), nuts pulses, less processed food etc. We are finding smoothies a great way to get more nutrients into them. I always thought I was feeding them healthily but this has given us a reset and I am hoping it will help. No illnesses in the last few weeks since we started it so I’m hopeful, although I know the change of seasons will help. Good luck.

Well I wouldn't always take antibiotics straight away just because doctor says over the phone. Some illnesses will be viral and that is too much. It will destabilise his gut and probably make him more prone to illness.

It couldn't hurt to push for a full set of bloods while you're at the hospital though.

Hi my 2 year has had antibiotics at least 10 times this year due to swollen tonsils and we are concerned about how many she has had. How is your little one doing now has his health improved, and is there any signs of issues caused by so many antibiotics?
