When did IUGR baby catch up, if at all?

My baby is eight months today, six and a half corrected. He had intrauterine growth restriction and was born tiny and is now small even for his corrected age. He also has no teeth, wobbles over when he sits up (but wants to sit.) He just feels so much smaller than other babies even those born on his edd. He's meant to go to nursery at one but he's so small and behind that I just feel it's not right for him.

Sorry for being an anxious mum who starts lots of threads

My DS was IUGR. He is now 11, the smallest in his school year, and very, very skinny still. He was early to walk but didn't get much hair or any teeth until much later than friends kids the same age. He was on the 0.2 percentile from birth and stayed on it consistently, never had a big growth spurt.

He's smart, funny, active, intelligent and wonderful. He's probably unlikely to ever be a power lifter, but that's just fine!

Don't worry, it's very early days. The health visitor will hopefully be keeping an eye that everything is on track.

My iugr baby is a hulking, hairy 19 year old !
It's early days x

My 9 year old was IUGR, slow to talk but walking she wasn't too behind on. She's not one of the tallest in her year but definitely not the smallest and is quite a strong rugby player. I worried when she was little if she'd ever catch up with her peers but by the age of 2 you wouldn't have Bern able to tell about her difficult start to life

Thanks both of you. Yeah we're having him weighed regularly but he's not even on the chart for his actual age. Hardly any hair too.

I feel nervous about sending such a small child to nursery at one

He's perfect, just small and can't sit up for long.

Mine was born on 0.4th centile, didn’t catch up. He has growth hormone deficiency and has been on injections of GH since he was about 5yo. Starting catching up then and now, at 13 is on the same centile as his siblings (25th, about right for our family). Ask GP for this to be considered but nothing serious will be done before school age.

sleepwhenidie · 21/03/2023 16:37

My DS2 also didn’t have teeth until he was 2!

theotherfossilsister · 21/03/2023 16:37

Thank you @sleepwhenidie , it's definitely something I will ask about.

My DD was IUGR, born at 36 weeks weighing 1.6kg.

  • Sitting: 9 months
  • Crawled: 10.5 months
  • First tooth, pulled to stand and babbling: 1 year 6 days (was a busy day!)
  • Walked: 15 months

Was a bit slow to talk, didn’t really start speaking much until 2y1m but doesn’t stop now…

Shes always been a little dot, she’s turning 3 in May and is about 12kg and is short at 90cm.

I remember worrying about her size but that hasn’t stopped her; she’s small but mighty and can talk for England! It’s still early days, he’ll be fine ☺️

My eldest was born at 31 weeks weighing 2lbs (eclampsia & IUGR)

Honestly, he didn't seem to "catch up" until he started primary school. You wouldn't have know he was prem from then on. Now at 15 he's just under 6ft tall, skinny as a rake and so bloody brainy.

I was so worried as he was "slow" meeting his milestones, even for his corrected age. Then my dad said "babies don't come with an instruction manual telling them when to do things. He will do it when he's ready".

That helped me beyond belief and I hope it brings you a bit of relief too as it's true, one day the age he does things for the first time won't matter one bit

Thank you. I adore him and think he's brilliant but he's definitely behind the other babies if his corrected age. He's also not on the weight chart for his actual age but hoping that will change now he's eating more. Oh and I have massive guilt for not exclusively breastfeeding but he needed formula and literally I never made enough milk despite crying on the breast pump all night, triple feeding etc. I keep thinking he'd be bigger if I'd made more milk.

@ForeverTired89 she sounds so similar to him, to birth weight etc.
