Anything to be concerned about?

Arms and legs are like this but she doesn't feel cold. No other obvious symptoms of being unwell I don't think

Gossipxox · 20/03/2023 12:22

Looks perfectly normal to me I always remember the health visitor made a comment about my daughter looking great with her beautiful mottled skin

OutofControl3 · 20/03/2023 12:24

My baby is 9 week old and has this on his hands comes and goes on the body too!

cocksstrideintheevening · 20/03/2023 12:26

We call it corned beef skin, my kids still get it a bit now and they're much older.

Have you taken her temperature?

Todaynotalways · 20/03/2023 12:38

DD often got a bit mottled if she was even slightly chilly (cool breeze chilly, rather than freezing cold)- and also if she was sickening for a cold (though probably less likely in a new born).

Alwaysoneoddsock · 20/03/2023 12:44

Is this new today? Does she have a temperature OP? It’s probably nothing to worry about, but I would her checked out by the GP today.

WeWereInParis · 20/03/2023 12:47

Both my DDs often had skin like that.

However, if it's not normal I think it's worth getting it checked. When DD2 was 6 weeks old she was ill and I had to take her to A&E. She didn't have a temp but was vomiting a lot (turned out to be a UTI). Anyway, when we got to A&E the triage nurse was concerned about the skin and got a dr to come check it ASAP. Was all fine, the dr was happy after having a look, but I think it's one of those things that can be fine and can be a concern.

Babyboa · 20/03/2023 12:49

Based on personal experience I would go straight to A&E. I don’t want to scare you as I’m sure what happened to us was rare, but I wouldn’t take chances with a little one again. Have you taken temperature?

Mermaidparades · 20/03/2023 12:55

Please get your baby checked over asap, unfortunately mottled skin may be a cause for concern. No one will think you’re time wasting.

febbabies2023 · 20/03/2023 12:59

Haven't managed to take her temp as we were staying away from home last night - she feels normal though (although I know it's not a sure fire way to know)

DS who is 2 has had chicken pox this week although she has no signs

All she does is sleep but this is normal for her. No issues with feeding.
She did have a green blowout poo day before yesterday which was super runny
She was also extremely unsettled that night for no obvious reason

Other than that she seems fine
I've wrapped her up nice and warm and will check her over again shortly. If she's still mottled I will ring 111 for advice

Seems to be mixed responses on here (expected of course)

www.meningitis.org/meningitis/check-symptoms

scroll down to look at the ‘red’ list.

If I’d listened to 111, my baby would probably have died.

Mermaidparades · 20/03/2023 13:08

Please don’t wait. I don’t want to frighten you, but mottled skin is a warning sign

premicrois · 20/03/2023 13:21

I would be calling the GP to have baby checked over

Pollywoddles · 20/03/2023 13:23

Given the other information I’d be getting her checked asap. I’d never take a chance with a tiny baby.

BlueSeaWave · 20/03/2023 13:27

No one on MN should reassure you, even a doctor wouldn’t give advice. If you’re concerned enough to post about a tiny baby then call 111. Where ever you are over night you can usually buy a thermometer, ok not Sunday night but you could get one from 8am anywhere this morning to check.

davegrohll · 20/03/2023 13:31

Just to say mottled skin in young babies IS normal but it can also be a sign of infection... with a baby so young I would get her checked over just to be safe

juicyjanet1 · 20/03/2023 13:36

Mottled skin can be a sign of infection. It was in my baby, who had a severe UTI at a similar age.
Please get her checked out, hopefully it is nothing 🤞

Squamata · 20/03/2023 13:42

The problem with babies is that they have all kind of crazy stuff going on which can be a symptom of something, or not (eg temp can be fine in a few hours, or a sign of a problem)

I'd have her checked out, especially as you've had chicken pox in the house.

The GP sent my DGS straight to A&E when his skin went mottled like that - I'd definitely get it checked out.

(My DGS was fine btw, just had a bug, but worth checking)

Cazs818 · 20/03/2023 14:04

Looks similar to what my baby has link - Mottled skin

hers effects only her right leg mainly in winter , take plenty of photos at different times of the day for the paediatric consultant to look over

BertieBotts · 20/03/2023 14:07

I've never seen that. Surprised so many people say it's normal.

If it's new for your baby I'd be wanting it looked at ASAP

febbabies2023 · 20/03/2023 18:09

Thank you all for your comments

I have looked at all the symptoms of meningitis and will keep an eye out

Her temp is 36.2 so normal
The mottled skin seems to be much better so I can only assume she was colder than she felt to me?

And for the poster who said 'concerned about to post about a tiny baby' I just asked if it was anything to be concerned about or not, I didn't think she was dying or I would have just called 999 obviously
