Sons eye is swollen, red and yellow discharge….

HJB2021 · 19/03/2023 12:17

Hi my son had watery eye and then he got poorly, rash, really high temp was given IV antibiotics for 4 days.

A few days after we left hospital the watery eye returned and now his eye lid is red and swollen, has some yellow discharge. I have no idea if this is related the his previous illness but do you think this could wait until tomorrow? Or would 111 be appropriate?

thanks

It sounds like conjunctivitis to me.

Please get seen. I assumed DS had conjunctives at around 9 months but it was orbital cellulitis

RiaOverTheRainbow · 19/03/2023 12:20

I'd call 111, if it can wait they'll tell you that. It sounds like it's worse than standard conjunctivitis, and I'd err on the side of caution with eyes.

HJB2021 · 19/03/2023 13:06

So 111 said I need to drive 30 miles tomorrow to speak to an eye doctor (can’t remember of an eye doctor). It’s not NHS it’s a private clinic, they weren’t concerned at all. @Partey did your little one have any other symptoms? He seems okay in himself

@HJB2021 he didn’t at the time but it’s potentially quite serious if not treated in time. It reoccurred a few times. We are lucky enough to live 20 mins away from a brilliant eye infirmary and every time it happened we were seen as soon as we arrived

TourmalineGiraffe · 19/03/2023 18:44

Hope all is well now but have just seen the images and couldn’t not say something.

My child had very similar looking eye which was diagnosed as orbital cellulitis.

My child was admitted straight to hospital and put into IV antibiotics. Obrital cellulitis is very serious as can lead to meningitis or sepis.

I would really take your little one to be seen today.

Seeline · 19/03/2023 18:47

My DD has similar, but milder, and doctor diagnosed blepharitis and gave antibiotic cream. But she did say if it got worse go straight to A&E.

AlwaysLatte · 19/03/2023 18:48

I will get him to an eye hospital to be on the safe side.

AlwaysLatte · 19/03/2023 18:48

*Would

TourmalineGiraffe · 19/03/2023 18:51

Also, I am really not trying to over worry you but I would not rely on 111 for this scenario.

I physically took my child to a GP and then to a walk in clinic. Both times I held up my phone with an image of a child with orbital cellulitis and said I think it’s this. (After googling and seeing an old thread from mumsnet about it, really!).
Both times doctors were dismissive and gave eye drops.
Late that night I drove to a A&e and they waved us straight through as soon as they saw her eye.

Oddbobbyboo · 19/03/2023 18:55

When my sons eye looked like that it progressed quite quickly to Optical cellulitis. I don't mean to alarm you but if it's swollen more since your photos I would probably take him to A&E x

underneaththeash · 19/03/2023 19:25

@comingoutofmycageandillbedoingjustfine @RiaOverTheRainbow conjunctivitis is inflammation of the conjunctiva, the transparent bit over the white of the eye. Not a lid issue.

That looks like a recurrence OP. Do you have the number from the ward after you were discharged? If so, the best thing to do would be to call them.

We would do a same day referral for that, so within 12 hours, but it depends on how quickly it's progressing.

I know, I posted before I saw the OPs picture she uploaded. I can see how it doesn't look like conjunctivitis. Call 111 OP

HJB2021 · 19/03/2023 20:23

Thanks everyone, I really appreciate your responses. The swelling has gone down a lot so now I’m thinking maybe it can’t be the cellulitis??

HJB2021 · 19/03/2023 20:32

Gosh I don’t know what to do, his eye looks almost normal now…. Should I still go to a&e??

OP posts:
TourmalineGiraffe · 19/03/2023 20:35

Very hard to answer, I would say at no stage did the swelling go down, it simply got worse and worse. So that’s a good sign.

davegrohll · 19/03/2023 20:50

Has your son been discharged from the hospital care yet?

HJB2021 · 19/03/2023 20:53

@davegrohll yes he was discharged last week. He was given iv antibiotics 4 days worth. They never knew what was wrong with him they just were concerned as his inflammation markers where high (higher than you would typically have with a virus)

I would call the ward and see if they would check him over - I think you stay under hospital care for 7 days or something once discharged where you can go back ? Someone might correct me though

HJB2021 · 19/03/2023 21:00

@TourmalineGiraffe okay well that’s good to know it’s a good sign. I am going to wait until the morning and speak to a gp but I have a feeling they will try fob me off

OP posts:
HJB2021 · 19/03/2023 21:01

@davegrohll thanks, that’s really good to know. I think I will give them a call, they were super helpful when we were there so would be better than going through his GP

Sometimes the body can fight on it's own. Keep an eye on it overnight.

underneaththeash · 19/03/2023 21:06

It absolutely needs seeing in the morning though.

HJB2021 · 20/03/2023 08:45

So the swelling has gone down, which is great. But both of his eyes were completely stuck
shut this morning with the yellow gunk. I’ve cleaned them up and they look fine now but im
phoning the doctors just incase
