Do these look like nail marks to you??

My son had a cannula fitted last week, it was taken out yesterday and I noticed these marks and they look like they dug their nails into him really hard. What do you think?

it makes me so sad as he was so distraught whilst they fitted it I hate to think they were digging their nails into him too!

No, they don’t to me and also without being cruel, if we all said yes, what does that achieve for you. He has had it removed and I feel it unlikely a Hcp would try and hurt your child on purpose

Throwncrumbs · 15/03/2023 11:44

I’ve placed many cannulas and always wear gloves, so can’t see how nails would cause this. It does look to me that he was sensitive to the dressing they used though.

LatteLady · 15/03/2023 11:44

No, the marks do not look like that at all.

MissingMoominMamma · 15/03/2023 11:47

They do to me. Could he have tried to get it off himself?

euff · 15/03/2023 11:50

Two of them do seem to look like nail marks. Are they too big to be his own if he was uncomfortable wearing it?

I don't want to dismiss your concerns because we know that professionals can hurt harm and kill on purpose and through bad practice and negligence but hoping not. Where my mum worked they were very good at distracting little kids and removing these with no trace.

They don't look like nail marks to me, and definitely not week old nail marks.

HJB2021 · 15/03/2023 11:57

The round make is where the cannula was placed. He was moving so much they were having to hold him very tight, so maybe if they are nail marks it was an accident. The marks aren’t from him it was bandaged up as soon as they had placed it.

It’s not nail marks I don’t think. It very much looks to me like the little plastic wings that are on the cannula to hold it in place have been digging in when he bent his wee hand

fUNNYfACE36 · 15/03/2023 11:59

FFS OP!

lippylippy · 15/03/2023 12:03

I agree, it looks like rubbing from the plastic wings of the cannula, or a reaction to the Tegaderm dressing that also has wings.

I agree

Sticking a child with your nails (through gloves) certainly wouldn't keep the child's hand in place. It would be the exact opposite.

It's the marks (irritation) caused by the dressing holding it. You get it with plasters sometimes.

MissHoollie · 16/03/2023 22:49

It's the butterfly wings part of the cannula you can see that have left a mark

LightDrizzle · 16/03/2023 23:01

Cannula wings, definitely. Can you see how they are placed symmetrically in relation to the cannula entry point?

Poor little mite! They won't have wanted to cause him pain, sometimes it is unavoidable if treatment is needed and if he was struggling and moving, he will have inadvertently made it much worse.

ladydimitrescu · 16/03/2023 23:20

It's the little wings that hold it in place.

It is distressing when we see marks on our DC. I understand, OP. As a carer I regularly get deep nail marks on my wrists and on the backs of my hands unfortunately. They do not look like the marks on your son's hand.
