Should she be eating after vomiting

Hi,

3 year old has been vomiting since early hours of Sunday morning. She’s having drinks and really long spells without vomiting. We’ve got up this morning, she’s had a big drink of water and been sick. Had a cracker and been sick. Dh thinks it’s because she’s not eaten and we should encourage her to eat and that will stop her being sick. I think wait till she wants to eat or she’ll just bring it up again.

which of us is right?

The problem is probably the 'big' drink of water. Taking sips and nibbling on ginger biscuits and toast would be better.

I believe current guidelines are that you can eat as normal but I really wouldn't want to and still go by flat lemonade, ginger biscuits, toast and plain mash potato in my house same as my parents did when I was little.

As an aside, if you can get her a packet of refreshers or similar chalky sweets it makes vomit taste much better, I don't really know why but I learnt this when I had hyperemesis and was sick throughout my pregnancy.

Have you got any ice lollies? They are the best thing to start with as you get liquid in nice and slowly.

Vomiting since early hours of Sunday in a wee one is quite unusual. Keep an eye on her for signs of dehydration.

We've all just had a vomiting bug and found the younger the family member the more quickly it came and went. DD (4) was vomiting ferociously last night and is eating and drinking again and full of beans. In your shoes I'd be started to worry about dehydration in her.

Also my DH has been the same - totally obsessed with rushing to get food/liquid into anyone who has been sick (himself included). I am much more a veteran of vomiting than him, sadly, and always just wait as long as I can before having anything to let my stomach rest. Then slowly, slowly, introduce liquids (that's why I recommend ice lollies).

whilst dehydration is a worry it’s still best to slowly give liquids to give the stomach time to settle. And then when liquids stay down and she feels like it slowly small snacks like a cracker, toast, plain rice or potato.

If she is still vomiting today, I would phone and even request a GP phone consultation. She might need oral rehydration sachets. BRAT diet for vomiting- bananas, rice, apples and toast. Only if she actually wants to eat and just little amounts.

Sunday morning is only 48 hours. Perfectly normal for a gastro bug and I’d expect another 24 hours of it.
if she’s drinking and passing urine and her lips don’t look cracked she’s keeping down enough fluids to not be dehydrated.
my little one was hospitalised with dehydration last year and the dr recommended small sips
of flat coke / lemonade (add water to take out the bubbles) to get sugar and salt back in her, it’s just a case of
Riding it out. Longer spells between vomiting is a good sign. Advice now is no need to follow a plain diet but like other PP’s I’d keep it fairly simply in meantime. Don’t worry so much about food it’s the fluids you want her to take in (mine went a week+ with no food intake at all and they weren’t worried as long as she held
down some

We've learnt through experience that no food for at least 12-18 hours let's the tummy settle down, and if water is coming back up, we syringe 5ml or 10ml at a time every 10/15 minutes. And after 12/18 hours of no vomiting then we start with half a cream cracker, quarter of slice of dry toast, you get the idea. It's the only thing that works for us. They do feel hungry and get annoyed that we won't let the wolf things down but learnt the long way!

Also yes with the pp one of mine gets dairy intolerance after a tummy bug so we avoid it completely for at least a month afterwards and then reintroduce it gradually.

No food, just lots of small sips of water. It makes absolutely no sense whatsoever to give food to anyone who is still vomiting.

I’m 100% on the no eating train after vomiting. Give the stomach a good 12-24 hours to just rest. Sip on those rehydration salts slowly in the meantime or water also. I’ve always found eating too quickly just makes you/them sick again which not only spreads the germs around more but also means yet another cleaning job! The less vom the better quite frankly!
