Dental work not covered by NHS

Hi, no idea if anyone will be able to help but Google isn’t coming up with much help or advice. Our 9 year old daughter suffers with a dental condition called Molar Incisor Hypo-mineralisation. It is thought that it could be caused by myself being ill during pregnancy, or her early years whilst these teeth were forming.

During her last check up our dentist has come up with a plan. She will at some point need two molars extracted, but is too young for this now/not at the correct point for new teeth to move into this place. They are crumbling away and causing pain. Our dentist and a second today have said the work needed next (to build a shield around these two teeth) will not be covered on the NHS. So, we just wondered if there is perhaps an organisation that help with this, or if anyone has been in a similar position before and managed to change the minds. The work is quoted at £750, so whilst not a horrendous amount we know it will be the first of many other expensive dental bills for her. Or any other MIH mums with any advice and help, would be amazing. Thank you.

I know this doesn't address your question but wanted to share our experience with you.
My DD had the same problem. She had 4 back teeth and 2 others removed at age 12 before having braces fitted. All done on the NHS but possibly because it was necessary before she could have braces.
She's now 21 and interestingly, her wisdom teeth are also affected.
She was diagnosed coeliac at age 17 and hypo mineralisation is an often overlooked symptom. Might be worth your DD being tested.

Thank you so much for your reply. That is really interesting and something I will look into. She does often complain about her tummy, I had no idea there was a link. Thank you. Hope your daughter is well now.

It's important not to exclude gluten from her diet while awaiting testing as it interferes with the results.
DD manages her diet well and is definitely better than she was before diagnosis. I'm pretty sure she has other autoimmune issues but it's difficult to pin down as so many of her symptoms are vague. She's very stoic though and just gets on with things.
Good luck with your daughter.
