Severe hypodontia requiring jaw surgery for DS16.?

Does anyone have any experience of this? His hypodontia is really severe and he's been given jaw surgery as an option as part of a restorative dentistry programme. Th consultants were amazing but it's still a shock and seems to be relatively rare,

@Monstermunchy hypodontia can be genetic but Iv not seen any evidence whereby it worsens down the family line. Would be an interesting study!

Thanks for responding @shakeitoffsis and @Squirrelsnut - it’s reassuring to be able to discuss this with people who understand 😊

The doctors haven’t asked if we had it in the family but I’ve always told them!
Hoping it doesn’t get worse as it’s inherited - it would be interesting to know - although no one in my family has it so clearly it started with me 🤷🏻‍♀️

My dentist has advised that I should probably have my remaining milk tooth out before it causes issues - I’m building myself up to saying yes!

I’d question why the baby tooth needs to come out. I still have a baby molar aged 40 - there’s no root, but it’s wedged in place and does its job. No dentist has ever said to me it should come out and the orthodontist who did my work in my early 20s said he’d expect them to be fine til I was 40.

I had its pair replaced with an implant about 5 years ago as I had an abscess underneath but no issues so far with this one.

Edited

An X-ray showed that it doesn’t look great inside although from the outside it seems ok. I had its pair taken out 4 years ago as the enamel flaked off the outside (forceably removed as it was fused to my jaw bone so they presume this one will be the same) and I had to go for a bridge (which is fine)

I’m also 10 years older than you so I guess they want to prevent me having to deal with awful toothache if it gives up! I’ll need referring to the hospital too as it’ll most likely be a nightmare to remove. It’s done well to last this long…

Hi I know this thread is a few months old but it’s reassuring to hear that the end result can be positive for Hypodontia - I don’t have anyone else to talk to this about .
@Squirrelsnut Hope treatment is in progress now.

My ds is missing 6 adult teeth - and a year in to complex brace treatment - he has to have dental screws next.
I’m missing (I think) 3 adult teeth (still have 1 milk tooth) so he’s inherited it from me. I also wish I’d had orthodontic treatment as I have a cross bite too. Facially my dentist has reassured me that he couldn’t tell until he looked in my mouth but the older I get the more aware of my teeth I am! But feel more guilt that I’ve passed this on. Does anyone know (@shakeitoffsis?) if this gets worse every time it’s passed on? Eg could any kids that ds has have even more to deal with?

I don’t think this gets worse as it’s passed on. Grandmother had it, my kids father missing less than 6. Of our 2 children one has all teeth present, the other was missing 12 adult teeth ( not including wisdoms). After 10+ years of treatment she looks great with dental implants and can eat normally.

If you are missing 6 or less they can mostly fix this by moving around the teeth that are present.

Thanks @Chickenkorma64 its interesting to hear how it’s panned out in your family.

My other dc has a full set of amazingly straight and lovely teeth - so it’s my younger one who got unlucky!

I guess as with anything genetic it’s the recessive/dominant gene combination that determines this
