Does this sound like glue ear?

Thinking my 4 year old is possibly displaying signs of glue ear but I'm not entirely sure. Waiting on GP appointment but my local doctors is crap so could be a couple weeks yet.
His hearing seems ok but he is always extremely loud. His ears are always bright red and hot and he sometimes wakes in the night with ear pain and needs calpol but doesn't mention it in the day. But his behaviour is utterly awful - angry, lashes out, very frustrated, doesn't listen, always irritable.
Anyone got any experience with this?

That does sound like it could be glue ear. Does it get better over the summer?

When you go to the GP impress on the GP that it is effecting his education (I assume he's starting school in September) as he doesn't seem to hear things.

How's his speech?

Thanks for replying. His speech is good, he is easily understood. But he started talking around 2 and these symptoms with his ears have come on recently so hopefully his speech will be unaffected if it is glue ear.
I will definitely mention that to the GP, thanks.

My DS is the same age and currently has glue ear. For him its a lot more noticable in loud places or outside. He doesn't hear low tones very well and the doctor described it as if hearing under water. I hope it clears for your little one. We had to have 3 hearing tests space out 3 months apart to prove it wasnt clearing up by itself. They now finally have referred to ENT so I'm hoping it will be before starting school. Good luck op.

Has he had lots of sore throats etc? I believe the adenoids can become enlarged in much the same way as tonsils after repeated infections and block the proper draining of Eustachian tubes and therefore exacerbating glue ear. This is why lots of children have adenoids removed along with tonsils. Happy to stand corrected by any medical professionals if I’m wrong x

If it’s very slow to see a GP you could try your HV - they can refer for hearing tests. You’d need a GP for an ENT referral but might be useful to get hearing test done in parallel?

I agree with this. My son has glue ear and our initial ENT referral took 12 months. It would have been longer but they had a cancellation. Meanwhile he was seen in audiology quite promptly after a referral from the school nurse because he failed a hearing test. I hadn't even thought of health visitor so that's a really good shout

Thanks for the replies. I finally got him checked out yesterday and he has a huge build up of wax which will be causing the pain. Glad it's not glue ear though.
