Possible diabetes in teen?

Hi everyone, my dd is 17 and for the past two years has had recurrent thrush and a nearly constant sore throat, she says it's more like the area at the back of her mouth. Nothing has shown up in swabs and she had a finger prick and non-fasting blood test last summer but nothing showed up. I'm still concerned though as she's missing lots of school and generally feels like crap. Also, she pees A LOT and her toes are always red or purple.

I have an uncle and a cousin who are type 1 so I'm wondering if any of you have any knowledge of a sore throat/mouth being a factor.
I brought her back again yesterday and demanded a fasting blood test. I know it could be anything, but at least it might put these concerns to bed.

She says she's always thirsty but I don't think its excessive. Her peeing is though. She's thin naturally but doesn't seem to have gained weight in a long time so she is very slim even though she has a very good appetite.

Thanks for reading!x

A non fasting HBA1C, rather than a fasting glucose, would show her blood sugars over a 3 month period rather than just that one moment in time.

Thyroid issues can cause weight loss and excess thirst along with frequent urination if kidney function is affected. Peeing a lot can also be a bladder training issue. All those times you just go before you leave the house, go when you get there, go before you go to bed, train you bladder to feel uncomfortable holding more than a little so it gives you the urge to go.

Hopefully the blood tests will give you some answers and put your mind at rest.

She wouldn't have had type 1 diabetes for that long - she'd be dead within weeks or even days if she had untreated type 1.

Always worth a check though in case it's developed more recently or could even be type 2 (unlikely given her age and the fact she's not overweight). Regardless of outcome, I would push Dr for further tests to find out what's wrong.

Agree with the Hba1c.

I'm only a bone carpenter, but has she had a urine dipstick? I'm pretty sure there has to be glucose in the urine in order for it to cause frequent peeing.

Actually there’s more studies coming out to suggest adults are being diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. There’s autoimmune conditions which are damaging the pancreas etc.

if her fasting blood tests comes back ok OP then it won’t be diabetes.

another thing I would get checked is diabetes insipidus if she’s urinating lots. Nothing to do with diabetes either

Everyone thanks so much for your replies, it has put my mind at rest somewhat. We'll see what the bloods say and we'll probably see an ENT doc to see if they can help.x
