Holiday insurance for pre existing condition

Does anyone have any experience of getting holiday insurance for a child with a pre existing condition? My DSS17 has a genetic mutation which is similar to Bechet's disease which is itself pretty rare but he's the only known person with this specific mutation. He's usually in good health and wants to come to Italy with us in the summer but it'll be our first time abroad since his diagnosis and he has recently been hospitalised with worsening of symptoms. He's now back at school so hoping his health is looking up but nothing guaranteed. He injects a drug once a week and there's talk of a new one to be injected every day!

I've had similar with DH. I'd start by using the comparison sites (e.g Compare the Market, Money Supermarket etc). If the mandatory questions don't cover it (the questions are the same for all companies) then call the company who had a policy that best meets your needs after answering the questions and explain to them the condition and that it wasn't possible to disclose during the process. Most will offer cover for an additional fee.

Do a price comparison and enter the name of the condition, then it should ask if the person is taking medication for this and if it’s being managed, then you should get a price. If it’s a rare condition you may need to ring some insurers. You could try Staysure who are a big travel insurance company.

Medicaltravelcompared.co.uk has been good for my Dh with multiple conditions, in reality was only £30 or more expensive than mine .Hth

Try a company called 'Insurewith'

It really depends how serious they think the condition is and probably where you’re going. I’ve just been quoted 2k insurance for Dd to go to America.

I've recently finished cancer treatment and surprisingly Tesco were the cheapest by a mile.

We have travel insurance with our Nationwide Flexplus account, they cover my DS's medical conditions for free (1 of them we had to pay an additional fee for at one point but it was still reasonable) and we had previously struggled to get cover. Might be worth checking your bank/building society offers anything similar. Good luck

We’ve used insurancewith, all clear and staysure with DS1s inherited condition. They’ve been good.

DS1 had a hospital admission between booking the trip and us leaving and I called to update them. They said they wouldn’t cover for that specific complication now because of the flare up but would still cover everything else. We decided we didn’t want to go on that basis and they refunded everything. And this was March 2020 so there was another reason we didn’t want to go!

They also agreed to continue to provide cover after I was diagnosed with some pregnancy complications with DS2 which I was surprised about.

That's great thank you all. I think it'll be a phone call job cos there's no name for the condition as such. They apparently call it Bechet's for the purposes of getting his treatment approved I think but the mutation has a name. I guess it might be an issue that we would need to be covered if the recent complications happen again so if they wouldn't cover him being hospitalised for those symptoms, it wouldn't be worth it.
