How much snot is too much snot?

I’m no stranger to snotty, sick kids. But my 2 year old is something else. The snot streams, constantly. I have to wipe it every five minutes, and it’s been like this for months. Sometimes it’s quite clear and seems to be clearing up, then it goes thick and dark yellow again (sorry, hopefully the title put off any weak stomachs!). He gets a really sore patch under his nose from it, I use a barrier cream to try and limit how sore it gets. It affects his sleep, as it makes him cough. I’m pushing water at him because I genuinely worry that he’ll get dehydrated!

Is there a point at which this is indicative of a problem of any sort? He has toddler reflux, which is under control with omeprazole at the moment. He is fairly susceptible to viruses, picks up most of what goes around nursery.

My DC seemed stream with snot October to April for the first 6 years. Then it improved.

the time it was coming out of my DD eyes (yes, eyes) she was very ill, other than that it was just cold after cold in winter.

Thanks, I fear that’s what we have ahead! I expect it’s a never ending cycle of viruses of various strengths.

I think it can (unfortunately) be quite normal for some little ones as they fight infection after infection. It's even more of an issue at the moment as the current toddler / preschooler cohort have likely been lacking in normal levels of exposure over the last few years due to Covid-related isolation.

My 6 year old had really runny nose and its thick aswell she has learnt to use the nasel spray which has helped you could also try a antihistamine and see if that helps.

My DC had this - snot fir months after illness, Dr said it was likely rhinitis due to allergy e.g. dust. Was prescribed a steroid nose spray and piriton. The snot dried up in days.
