I've been worried about my DS (8) hearing for years, he had a hearing test about 5 years ago which we were told was normal. He's recently had another hearing test after being on the waiting list for 8 months and it turns out he is struggling with frequencies of 4000 hertz and higher. The doctor also said he had a slight conductive hearing loss in both ears. The doctor massively down played it to us and said he probably won't need hearing aids although he will refer him to paediatric audiology and see him again in 6 months. After his test we found a frequency sound video online and the difference in what DS can hear compared to what me and my other children can hear is huge! Also from what I can see online it suggests children with high frequency hearing loss won't hear most speech correctly.
So now I'm wondering is there some sort of threshold for children to qualify for hearing aids? If so does anybody know what it is or is it a postcode lottery?
I would really like him to try some hearing aids so he can tell us if he notices a difference. We are always repeating ourselves and I worry how much he is missing in school. He has always struggled at school and I now wonder if it had a lot to do with his hearing.
