6 year old vomiting for 5 weeks - not feeling sick

Hi, my son has been vomiting intermittently for 5 weeks now. We've been to the GP twice and a&e once and we still have no answers. We were sent away from a&e with a prescription for constipation and gp gave us a script for reflux. Has anyone had experience with anything similar?

OP I am sure it is not this and there are numerous more likely explanations, but I read that Rob Delaney’s poor little boy had a brain tumour which first manifested by him vomiting at random. Whatever it is i wouldn’t let the GP fob me off until I had some answers.

Hello OP

I'm really sorry to hear about your son. But ParentsTrapped is absolutely right to give you this advice.

My son was diagnosed with a brain tumour when he was 8. The first symptom we noticed was random and intermittent vomiting. He would be sick and then ask for cheese and onion crisps five minutes later, which as any parent knows is not normal.

We hadn't noticed the earlier symptoms as they were so gradual. Loss of balance and clumsiness. All 8 year olds fall over or get bruised playing with their friends?
Then the headaches started. A headache every morning which left him so ill and feeling so rubbish that he didn't want to go to school. And he loved going to school. Thankfully our GP recognised the symptoms straight away and referred him to the hospital.

Whilst the first consultant we saw was utterly crap and diagnosed him with migraine, the next one we saw was not. She was brilliant and after that the full on treatment regime kicked in.

I know stuff like this is terrifying. It absolutely is. I lived through it and wouldn't want anyone else to go through it. But please, please go back to the GP and ask to be referred to the paediatric clinic. Most GPs will never see a child with symptoms which might indicate a brain tumour so we sometimes have to do that work for them. My boy is now 36. The treatment he went through was successful. He's healthy and well. I hope with all my heart that your DS has something much less serious wrong with him.

I also hope that this hasn't been too difficult to read but it is very hard to write a post that says that you need urgent further medical advice and why, without giving you cause for worry.

If you ever do need to talk to anyone please PM me. I will be there.

xx

How is you DS, @Lisajane82? My niece is currently having the same symptoms and I stumbled across your thread.

Hi, he is much better. After weeks and weeks of daily vomiting and a lot of money spent on doctors visits we went to a paediatrician who said he obviously initially had a bug but then his stomach was so used to being sick that it didn’t know how to stop. She gave him breathing exercises to do whenever he felt he was going to be sick and they worked!! He hasn’t been sick in weeks. Such a relief as it was very worrying. Hope your niece is ok

My dd had this at 5. It was reflux and got much better with medication. eventually she grew out of it. Absolutely get checked out for other things as it is sensible to do that but could also be nothing scary.

Yes! We took him to a specialist and they said because he had a vomiting bug previously he stomach got in the habit of vomiting Everytime he ate and to do these breathing exercises after eating and it worked!

This posts made me so happy. So there is hope they can grow out of it. Can you please show me the breathing exercises ?

just before he felt the sick coming he had to do deep breaths in to make his tummy expand. I was so sceptical but it worked straight away. This was going on for weeks so we were very concerned
