Temperature returning in the evenings?

DD was sick last Friday several times. Fine on Saturday but in the afternoon a cough developed & a cold. Last few days she's been ok, coughing a lot, disturbed sleep but ok. Temp of 38 on Saturday day, nothing Sunday, temp of 38 again Tuesday day. Didn't bother with meds on either day as she was ok in herself & it went on its own. Yesterday she was off colour & didn't want much to eat much at all. Temp of 38.4 in the eve, I gave Neurofen at bed time. Woke up this morn, I would say back to her usual self, eaten as normal. Still coughing but alert, bright. Gets to dinner time, all of a sudden despite the dinner being something she requested, she won't eat. Has a bit of yoghurt, thats it. Temp of 38.4 again. She's been fine all day! I find it odd it has now returned again at night. Just wondered if anyone else had experienced this. DD is 4.

Peaks at night are normal but I wonder if she in fact had two separate illnesses.

@Eixample Nothing would surprise me, this winter has been hideous, no gaps, pretty much back to back illnesses! I wonder why temps spike at night, off to Google I go...

That's DDs model which unfortunately has made me look like a bit of a shitty parent to school/nursery in the past.

She wakes up full of the joys of spring and by early afternoon looks like death warmed up with a raging fever.

@FatAgainItsLettuceTime Has there ever been a time you can remember it going on for PP? This would be day 5, but I've not noticed her/thought she had a temp on a couple of the days so didn't bother using the thermometer anyway to check! all for letting it run it's course but no idea how long the course 'should' be.

She generally has a temperature for 3-5 days. The normal model is that she wakes up normal temp then it will increase over the course of the day.

I generally don't give medicine unless it's really high or she is feeling bad with it.

I've definitely had times where day 4 she'll wake up normal and I'll think OK off to school it must be over. Then I get a call mid afternoon to come get her early because it's come back.

@FatAgainItsLettuceTime Thanks for that. I'll see how she is tomorrow/Friday. So random.

It’s due to cortisol levels! They drop at night naturally and it’s why your temperature always goes up at night. Only know this from recent hospital stay with dd where I’d have talked to anyone about anything it was so lonely in our isolation room 😂

Have you got her tested for UTIs? When my dd was this age she would sometimes get spiking temperatures and it was this (another parent who was a GP suggested it might be this and she was totally right). Phone the GP and take a sample in?

baconroad · 02/02/2023 05:53

@mewkins No, only because she's got such a hacking cough & cold. If she had a temp with no other symptoms then I would think possibly the same.

Thought as this has been going on a few days it was on the way out, but she woke up coughing so much an hour ago I thought she was going to be sick. Throat looks red but no white spots so have a feeling the GP would only say it's viral. Bloody bugs are brutal this winter.

Oh bless her! Yes, the current bugs linger for weeks. I had one before Christmas and ended up on antibiotics eventually. Hope she feels better soon x
