DD is just coming 12 and been wearing glasses a couple of years. She was saying they were not helping as much so took her for eye test at ten months not the year and she needed a new prescription. Grand. Expected that. But I was really surprised they recommended contacted lenses that slow myopia.
She is not keen, she is already going to need four extractions and braces in the next few months. I don’t want to pile more responsibility on her.
is this a new thing, is it worth it? I say this a person with a very strong prescription about - 5 and - 6 myself.
I have attached her two recent eye tests for clarity and would appreciated some advice. Is it a sales thing or a new eye health thing we should encourage her to do.

If you can afford it, then myopia control is definitely worth trying. I’d suggest the spectacle lenses if you don’t feel she’s ready for contact lenses.

You mentioned the “optometrist was not selling it but kind of was”. I suspect this was them making it clear it’s an available intervention so they can document on your daughters notes that myopia control has been discussed with you.

Went to Specsavers today to collect her new glasses and they are doing the myopia ones as of last Tuesday 🙄
Ordered them but had to pay for more frames and the cost of the lenses so £280. We’ll see (ooh pun there!)

I would be interested to know if anyone has used the new myopic contacts in a teenager and have they worked in reducing the deterioration?

Earlgreyandcake · 09/03/2024 21:53

My two daughters had really good results- progression reduced

Anoth · 28/03/2024 19:04

@Earlgreyandcake can I ask if it took a while to get used to these lenses? My daughter is only 4 hrs in getting them today and says screen writing is blurry fuzzy and a bit odd looking!!! Distance seems fine. Wondered how long I give it before going back to ask?? Got a 5 day trial atm

Earlgreyandcake · 28/03/2024 23:36

Takes a couple of weeks- stick with it

Wondering if anyone here knows if the lenses offered by supersavers and boots are the same. We had an appointment with specsavers and they were pushing these new lenses for myopia for my daughter. I wanted to do some reading before agreeing. They seem like a good idea and so I wnat to get them, just not sure I want to go back to specsavers. I see boots also do them. Does anyone have any experience comparing the offerings? Many thanks!

Boots do myopia control lenses . They need to be worn 6 days a week , also standard lenses for children wanting occasional use

There’s no difference.
just go to the place you feel most comfortable at.

Back for more advice! DD has the glasses awhile now and they have worked well.
jan 23 right -1 & left -1.25 started glasses
Check sept 23 right -1.25 & left -0.75 free new lenses
feb 24 right was -1.25 & left -.25 free new lenses
today feb 25 right -0.75 & left -0.25

the optician recommended she just have normal lenses for a year and then recheck.

I said I thought if the change was .5 the new lenses were free and he said he was unsure just a locum, but I could ask the usual team. He thought if they were free stay on the miosmart glasses or if not try normal ones free for a year and retest. I spoke to the floor team and they called someone and they said as her sight had improved the new lenses were not free. But looking back they have always had a 0.5 change and always replaced the lenses free.
Anyone had dealings with Specsavers re this?
I am pleased her sight improving and don’t want to mess it up.
advice appreciated

The lenses aren't free indefinitely. They reduce the progression of myopia not stop it . I don't know specsavers policy but they aren't a lifetime lens.

@Starlightstarbright1 thanks for the info and reply
