Rotavirus?

PrincessConsuela12 · 29/01/2023 14:01

I'll be calling the Dr tomorrow but wanted to see if others have experienced this.

DC 2.5 had a temperature of 40.3 the Friday night / Saturday before last, I got an OOH GP appointment & told it was viral, the next day (Sunday) diarrhoea started, around 7/8 times a day. I rang the Dr on Wednesday who said it's probably gastroenteritis & would likely be cleared up by Friday but call back Monday if it hadn't. Although it has gotten better they are still having watery / mucusy diarrhoea 3/4 times a day. Temperature went relatively quickly & they are OK in themselves although have a cough & cold symptoms.

Does this sound like rotavirus? Is it common for it to go on for so long?

Hi! Just wanted to share my experience: when my son was 6 months old he caught what we assume was rotovirus and it lasted 3 weeks (with diarrhea 7-10 times a day). I was so worried and didn’t think it could possibly last that long but the pediatrician reassured me that it could. After 3 weeks it finally cleared up. I don’t think our case was usual but just wanted to share it in case it helps.

Thank you @Ecm223 that's reassuring. I keep reading 5-7 days so as it's gone past that I'm getting a bit concerned.

My dd6 had norovirus with another bacterial gastric virus in December. She was very poorly in the end with it with diahhrea 30+ times a day and ended up in hospital.
to reassure you, once we got home and hospital was no longer concerned, she continued with the mucus, runny diahhrea for another couple of weeks which the consultant said was normal as their intestines/ bowel are so inflamed. hope your lo feels better soon 💞

meant to add: no harm in asking for a stool sample to be sent off just to confirm it’s rotavirus

Thank you @wobblymum1 30 times a day?! How awful 😞 glad your DD is doing better.
I am going to ask if we can get a sample tomorrow.
Are they still contagious at this point? We haven't left the house for a week, no nursery etc & going a bit stir crazy but obviously don't want to go out if it can spread

Yes that when it was at its worst and she needed rehydrated in hospital 😢
i think not most likely not infectious now? But worth checking that before sending back to nursery💞

My dc was off school for two weeks and a bit when 4 (Reception) with diarrhoea. He had a bit of temp just before it started.

I took him to the doctors twice, taken sample etc. They didn't know exactly what it was and just advised waiting it out.

It was very scary as it just seemed to last for so long and I had to call the school every morning to say he's not better. He was well in himself, just tired with it, a bit dehydrated, and we had to stay home all the time.

I got a herbal tummy ache medicine off Amazon which helped him (mostly placebo effect, I imagine, as we got it quite later on).

@wobblymum1 it's the dehydration that worries me. It must've been a very scary time for you all. Thank you, I'll ask the Dr tomorrow. I think the rules at nursery are 48 hours so we're a few days from that (hopefully no more!) but it'd be nice to get out somewhere for a little while.

@puddingandsun Thank you for responding. The symptoms sound very similar to my DC. It really is worrying as everywhere I look says 5-7 days but I'm glad to hear other stories of it 'just' being diarrhoea that is lasting longer than the norm.
I'll have a look on Amazon & see if there is something I can get.

Try to not to worry about the dehydration- my one only got so when she hit 30+ times a day and she literally couldn’t keep any fluid down. She was confused, grey and couldn’t climb the stairs ☹️it was obvious she needed help. it sounds like your little one is keeping down enough to be ok and still playing so they’re still hydrated enough ☀️Xx

PrincessConsuela12 · 29/01/2023 23:22

Oh goodness, that sounds so scary.
Still plenty of energy, I'm not sure where it comes from, I'm not sure I'd be the same.

Thank you again @wobblymum1 Flowers

I just wanted to share an update, we got the stool sample back today & it's normal. I was really expecting it to come back with some sort of virus / infection. The diarrhoea has definitely eased & getting firmer (sorry, TMI) but surely it must've been something causing it for almost 2 weeks?!
Does anyone have any experience of this? I read about toddler diarrhoea so it could just be that?

@PrincessConsuela12 my son is now
on day 10 of sickness and diarrhoea it’s awful he’s 21 months. He ended up in hospital today the dr said he was very intrigued as to why it was going on for so long but not concerned and it should clear on its own! But he’s losing weight he’s miserable and I feel awful for him. He had something similar the same time last year and it lasted 9 days and he ended up on a drip they tested his poo then and it came back clear! Whatever bug it is it’s just awful and I’m assuming it’s the same one he had this time last year all the same symptoms :(

PrincessConsuela12 · 04/02/2023 00:19

@Anlou19 Thank you for responding & I'm sorry to hear your DS ended up in hospital, I hope he's feeling better soon.
Thankfully no vomiting but a long period of diarrhoea, it's just so strange to me that tests were clear. I'm hoping we're coming to the end now, it was 2 weeks ago today that the initial illness / high temperature started & we're all quite drained, DC especially
