Vision problem "things getting big and small" 6yo, cold/flu symptoms

Hello,

Help! I had an online consultation with Moorfields who said it sounded like a brain problem rather than an eye problem and suggested going to Vision Express. We're booked in tomorrow but just wondered if anyone had experienced anything similar with their child recently...

My 6yo has been poorly for a week started with a sore throat, then fever for 2 days and general cold/flu symptoms. Been too unwell for school. Tested negative for Covid (but tests obvs aren't 100% reliable). For the last three days they have been complaining about a vision problem. Says things get big and then small. And then the feeling goes away but it's happened 4 or 5 times a day for the past 3 days. Could be describing a dizzy feeling perhaps? Or maybe a problem with eyes? Has anyone had a little one with this symptom recently?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

My little one (6) had something similar recently when poorly with a virus. said I was “too close” and looked too to her (when I wasn’t) and that lines in the room looked too straight. Scared the heck out of me. Not sure if it was fever related, exhaustion from lack of sleep or something else but the drs weren’t overly concerned (unlike me). maybe some odd virus thing? When I was little with high fevers I used to find shapes changing size which scared me and I can still remember it.

Alice in Wonderland syndrome? I had this as a child, apparently it’s not a problem, just feels weird

I had a terrible illness over new year which did exactly this to me. I was in bed for a week with fever, sweats and chills, no appetite, and for a few days things seemed entirely the wrong size when I looked at them, trying to explain it to DH was hard so your 6 yo has done well to get across to you what’s happening. I too tested negative for covid but was seriously unwell, I’ve had 2 pretty bad bouts of covid and this was worse. I’d not worry too much. I’m still feeling generally more fatigued than usual but much better, I hope your dc feels better soon too

Any stomach problems?

I had Alice in Wonderland syndrome as a child. It was really scary and I found it really hard to describe to my Mum what it felt like. I grew out of it at some point but still remember how weird and scary it was. Like perspective just stops existing.

I agree with Alice in Wonderland syndrome. I've taught kids with it before, which is how I became aware of it.

My son said a few times when he was smaller that sometimes things looked really far away or really big. He’s not mentioned it for a few years now. He’s 13. Opticians found nothing wrong.
