DD throws up when excited - anyone else?

I'm just wondering about this as it happened again this morning.

DD is (just turned) 6 and for the last 2 years or so, if she's excited about something that's happening, she throws up. Just once, very suddenly - she literally bends over and gets sick, she says she can't make it to the bathroom because she doesn't know it's going to happen. She doesn't feel sick before or after. She's not running or jumping around when it happens, she's usually getting ready for school or something.

It happened before a teddy bear picnic at school and birthday parties that she was a guest at. It's not every time she's excited and it's never right before the event, it's usually a few hours before.

It's only happened about 5 times so I've never made a big deal of it. I usually just monitor her and if she's fine I send her to the party. Obviously if she was actually sick I'd keep her home but she's 100% herself.

I used to get this but it was more anxiety related for me so I’d be sick before exams/stage shows etc. In my case it led me to a pretty debilitating phobia of being sick in public (because i would get so anxious that the anxiety would make me sick so it was a bit of a vicious circle!) I think you are right not to make too much of it. I have happily outgrown this problem and barely think about it these days!

This used to happen to me, probably until I was 9 or 10. I had a big sick bowl that I carried round with me on my birthday morning, Christmas morning etc. I grew out of it with no further issues.

I’m not a child, but I’ve always had this when I get upset. I’m 36 and for as long as I can remember, when I’m properly crying I’ll start dry heaving and then end up vomiting.

I think our emotions are very strongly tied to lots of physical functions. In your daughters case, her body probably doesn’t know how to differentiate happy excitement from scared excitement so her fight or flight response is being triggered causing her to vomit.

One extra thought- something that really helped me with this was to breathe in really slowly through my nose and out through my mouth. Stops the anxiety/excitement from getting to such a ridiculous level so you aren’t sick!

Good to know it's not completely unheard of. It makes scene it's connected to being nervous/fight or flight. It's just weird that it's just once and she has no warning!
