Knots in DC's shoulder

motimacboatface · 27/01/2023 23:58

DC (preschooler) is constantly fidgety and takes forever to fall asleep. Once asleep, he sleeps at a very awkward angle and can stay in the same position all night. I was massaging him after a bath tonight and noticed a knot in his shoulder- of course he hit the roof when I touched it and won't let me go anywhere near the area again. What do I need to do? The slightest tickle or cuddle can lead to him saying we've hit him so I don't want to cause him any unnecessary pain. I've always suffered from tension in my back and neck and know how painful it can be but who do I take him to? Osteopath (I'm scared they'll cause actual damage), a masseuse specialising in children’s massage or a physiotherapist?

I’m sorry, but what?!

I’m very knotty. Always have been. Have him swing his arms around.

I don’t think you need to be panicking.

He's got sensory issues and we're awaiting an OT appointment. The slightest touch can upset him so a tickle or a hug often results in him saying "you're hurting me" or "ouch, you just hit me" 😔

I have to go very easy with the massages with him- they're not massages at all but the gentlest of touch to run in some oil!

Is there a big piece of missing info here?

Such as?

I've mentioned him being fidgety, sleeping awkwardly, knot in shoulder, being referred to OT to look into his sensory needs, etc. what else have I missed?!

I'd get him doing yoga and stretches for kids. If he wont tolerate touch from you, hes not going to tolerate it from a therapist.

You could offer a hot water bottle?

Good idea- I hadn't even thought of that!

Yes, he's not a touchy child and definitely won't like a stranger touching him. I feel so bad for him and can imagine the discomfort he must be feeling because of the knot. I only felt one but I'm worried there might more?

He doesn't like feeling too hot so not sure if the hot water bottle would help.

An osteopath studies at degree level for 4-5yrs, a physio has 3-4 yrs and a masseuse- could be just hands on or possibly a 6mth course!

I would see an osteopath with paediatric SEN experience. Especially as its involving strange sleeping positions, 'knots' etc. best of luck.

IF you can get him to professional, I'd give him ibuprofen 40min prior to appointment to help with any aches from manipulation.

Agree. you’re going to need a really switched-on osteopath given his sensory needs. Where are you?

London but happy to travel for the right person. Do you have any recommendations?

Thank you. Brilliant advice. Will have a search for someone. Hoping we have someone locally. If not, I'd be willing to travel so he gets seen by the right person.

I used to go to this place often. Its 2min from Bethnal Green tube. During the week its final year students who are supervised, but I think Saturdays its the qualified teachers/osteopaths. Maybe give them a call and see if any of the teachers have paediatric/SEN experience.

Okay so I've booked but person I spoke to didn't sound too promising saying they'll "have a go" to see if they can help 🥴
