Ear infection

Hello,

My DS(4) has had an ear infection for a month and it's showing no signs of improvement.

The first GP we spoke to over the phone said it was viral, he didn't need to see it and it just got worse.
A week later we saw another GP who looked, said yep bacterial - pus-y and swollen and gave a spray Otrizine maybe.
Another week and still no improvement - nurse practitioner saw us, it was still pus-y with discharge and blood so she gave us amoxicillin.
Which brings us to this week. Still no improvement, we've now got drops.

He's holding his ears frequently and crying or screaming with pain. We've been alternating calpol and nurofen but they're not making much of a difference. He's off his food, reluctant to drink and his temperature is up and down. Not massively (he has had febrile convulsions previously but we seem to be staying the right side of 40). He's also really sensitive to any bump or bash (I'm guessing in pain already so more sensitive) and obviously not sleeping.

I just don't know what to do, I hate seeing him in so much pain but don't know what to do.

Any advice or handholds welcome.

Poor little thing. I think I would be asking them to swab the ear and send the sample off for analysis, which will help
identify if there is any particular bacteria causing the infection. It may be something resistant to amoxicillin which a different course of antibiotics might fix?

Hi,

How did your son get on as i'm going through exact same with my daughter now? Waiting to see ENT specialist next week.

Thank you

Hello, it was horrific. It took 6 weeks and eventually drops only ENT could prescribe to clear it. But we did get seen by an awesome ENT consultant who sorted that and fast tracked his grommets. They were put in last March and he's been like a different child.

Oddly he has his first massive ear infection since then at the moment, we think the grommets may have fallen out on one side, but we're on week 3 and he does seem better. We're mainly dealing with pain now.

Hopefully that gives you some hope.
